England Unveils 2022 FIFA World Cup Squad

By Jeff Stinger

Gareth Southgate flies out with the English soccer team for the second time in search of World Cup glory. There’s good reason to believe that England can repeat the success of Russia in 2018 despite its recent poor form. With the unveiling of the England 2022 FIFA World Cup squad, it’s safe to say that the early signs look good. Potential fractures appear to have been addressed as the situation neutralizes. Since Southgate operates under the high expectations of any modern England coach, it’s always exciting to witness how long-time underachievers rebound. Now, let’s take a look at the 26-man lineup for The Three Lions’ Qatar campaign.

Not the predicted list

The list features some surprises along the way. Season 2018 saw the revival of the England team after a solid generation of players. The lead names are all set. Harry Kane is still the defining name and the captain. He enters the competition as a heavy +700 top scorer favorite. He operates alongside speedster Raheem Sterling who silenced critics during his Euro 202 performance. The supporting cast also looks solid, and features Bukayo Saka, Phil Foden, and Mason Mount, while Declan Rice is a rising star and is considered one of Europe’s outstanding midfielders.

The lead-up to the tournament had its ups and downs. Chelsea duo Ben Chilwell and Reece James are both ruled out due to injury. Kyle Walker and Kalvin Phillips are also out of the list following the pair’s surgery in late September. Aside from the injury misfortunes, Southgate also had to round out other areas of the squad. Players like Ivan Toney and Fikayo Tomori will miss their World Cup debut, with the 52-year-old going for names who have played key roles in his previous success at tournaments.

England 2022 FIFA World Cup Lineup

Group B should be relatively straightforward for England given their advantage on paper. If everything goes according to plan, we should see the Three Lions progress to the knockouts without many problems. Despite leaving out several in-form players from the list, Southgate is known for his tactical abilities and is likely to have a few tricks up his sleeves come their opening game as -357 favorites over Group B opponents Iran.

Without further ado, here’s England’s 26-man World Cup lineup:

Goalkeepers

  • Jordan Pickford (Everton)
  • Nick Pope (Newcastle United)
  • Aaron Ramsdale (Arsenal)

Defenders

  • Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool)
  • Conor Coady (On loan to Everton from Wolverhampton Wanderers)
  • Eric Dier (Tottenham)
  • Harry Maguire (Manchester United)
  • Luke Shaw (Manchester United)
  • John Stones (Manchester City)
  • Kieran Trippier (Newcastle United)
  • Kyle Walker (Manchester City)
  • Ben White (Arsenal)

Midfielders

  • Jude Bellingham (Borussia Dortmund)
  • Conor Gallagher (Chelsea)
  • Jordan Henderson (Liverpool)
  • Mason Mount (Chelsea)
  • Kalvin Phillips (Manchester City)
  • Declan Rice (West Ham United)

Forwards

  • Phil Foden (Manchester City)
  • Jack Grealish (Manchester City)
  • Harry Kane (Tottenham)
  • James Maddison (Leicester City)
  • Marcus Rashford (Manchester United)
  • Bukayo Saka (Arsenal)
  • Raheem Sterling (Chelsea)
  • Callum Wilson (Newcastle United)

Things look solid for the English national team under Southgate’s leadership with a semifinal appearance in the 2018 World Cup and the 2020 Euro final held in 2021. England craves better results in Qatar 2022 following positive performances in major tournaments. They did well until the Euro 2020 final, only losing to Italy on penalties. England secured the World Cup qualification–UEFA Group I to book a ticket to Qatar. High-profile stars like Harry Kane, Sterling, and Jordan Henderson are expected to step up come November 21, 2022.
