A fiery lineup in Qatar

Les Bleus’ recently-announced lineup is easily one of the deepest pools of talent in the tournament. Didier Deschamps said that he will ditch the once-successful 3-4-1-2 formation in exchange for a 4-3-2-1 formation. This was after the former failed to produce positive results at the Euros last summer. The Frenchmen have been sub-par as of late, with only a win in their last six competitive matches.

In his tenth year of coaching France, Deschamps remains wary of clashing egos that have affected the team throughout major tournaments. The Frenchman always puts his squad in line and implements a selection process that does away with prioritizing individual talent. Despite his practical style and being labeled uncreative by the media, the strategy stood the test in the 2018 FIFA World Cup. With that, France enters the contest as defending champions and Nations League champions.

Despite positive results throughout his career with the French men’s national soccer team, the 2022 challenge is to pull off a successful title defense. Until then, his future remains questionable, with Zinedine Zidane positioning himself to take over the head coaching position.

France 2022 FIFA World Cup Lineup

Two of their best players from the 2018 campaign, N’Golo Kante and Paul Pogba, will sit this one out after suffering injuries recently. This means other players are encouraged to step up and fill in the void. Real Madrid’s Aurelien Tchouameni takes care of the holding role, with Adrien Rabiot linking up with Matteo Guendouzi and Youssouf Fofana in the midfield. The latter pair are progressive options for team plans but Rabiot is expected to play point given his edge and experience.

Moreover, the lineup saw last-minute changes before heading to Qatar. Marcus Thuram is the 26th and final player added to the lineup. This update adds another dimension to a team that already has immense depth and strengthens its stand as -227 Group D favorites.

Captained by veteran goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, we see familiar names prepared to become the third back-to-back FIFA World Cup champions. Without further ado, here’s France’s 26-man World Cup lineup:

Goalkeepers

  • Alphonse Areola (West Ham United)
  • Hugo Lloris (Tottenham)
  • Steve Mandanda (Rennes)

Defenders

  • Lucas Hernandez (Bayern Munich)
  • Theo Hernandez (AC Milan)
  • Presnel Kimpembe (Paris Saint-Germain)
  • Ibrahima Konate (Liverpool)
  • Jules Kounde (Barcelona)
  • Benjamin Pavard (Bayern Munich)
  • William Saliba (Arsenal)
  • Dayot Upamencano (Bayern Munich)
  • Raphael Varane (Manchester United)

Midfielders

  • Eduardo Camavinga (Real Madrid)
  • Youssof Fofana (Monaco)
  • Matteo Guendouzi (Marseille)
  • Adrien Rabiot (Juventus)
  • Aurelien Tchouameni (Real Madrid)
  • Jordan Veretout (Marseille)

Forwards

  • Karim Benzema (Real Madrid)
  • Kingsley Coman (Bayern Munich)
  • Osmaune Dembele (Barcelona)
  • Olivier Giroud (AC Milan)
  • Antoine Griezmann (Atletico Madrid)
  • Kylian Mbappe (Paris Saint-Germain)

Having the services of +800 top goalscorer favorite Kylian Mbappe takes some of the pressure off the team. He gets to run the frontline with +1,265 top goalscorer and, 2022 Ballon d’Or winner Karim Benzema. The two will remain important pieces between midfield and attack in Qatar.
