Germany Unveils 2022 FIFA World Cup Squad

By Jeff Stinger

The Germany World Cup 2022 lineup looks the business. Since their underwhelming performance in 2018 as they came in as defending champions, many started to doubt their abilities. The Joachim Löw era ended in 2020 following another disappointing run at the UEFA Euro 2020. Hansi Flick took over the team in the wake of the downfall and aims to bring new light to the team. With the opening week of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in the pipeline, Germany puts on display its final list of players for the competition.

A fresh squad for the 22nd edition of the tournament

This is not the peak German lineup that once dominated the pitch during the 2014 World Cup. A Nations League loss to Hungary tells us that this team needs more work. Nevertheless, this is a more competitive team compared to what we saw at the Euros two years ago. There’s more balance and that famous well-oiled machine aura is back. Perhaps the best manifestation of their resurgence came after a 2-0 victory over Liechtenstein in Flick’s first match as head coach: Germany secured the home game two months later in dominant fashion, scoring nine goals and keeping a clean sheet.

Bayern Munich’s Jamal Musiala keeps the Group E +100 favorites interesting. The teenager has been sensational for his club, offering game-changing speed and skill. The Stuttgart-born attacker connects well with the veteran players. Put everything together with Flick’s tactically flexible strategy and creativity, the formula might just bring back the winning spirit we witnessed from the team not too long ago.

Germany 2022 FIFA World Cup Lineup

The Germans are in a prime spot now. If performances sustain, and all signs point to a positive trend, then we expect to see the side running in the right direction by bouncing back with a deep World Cup run. The generational shift looks strong in this collection of youthful stars. This will be a bittersweet World Cup for some of the staples of German soccer in the past decade.

Captained by 36-year-old Manuel Neuer, we find familiar names mixed with younger talent that holds Germany’s future. That said, here’s Germany’s 26-man World Cup lineup:

Goalkeepers

  • Manuel Neuer (Bayern Munich)
  • Kevin Trapp (Eintracht Frankfurt)
  • Marc-Andre ter Stegen (Barcelona)

Defenders

  • Thilo Kehrer (West Ham)
  • Niklas Sule (Borussia Dortmund)
  • Lukas Klostermann (RB Leipzig)
  • Christian Gunter (SC Freiburg)
  • Armel Bella-Kotchap (Southampton)
  • David Raum (RB Leipzig)
  • Antonio Rudiger (Real Madrid)
  • Nico Schlotterbeck (Borussia Dortmund)
  • Matthias Ginter (Freiburg)

Midfielders

  • Joshua Kimmich (Bayern Munich)
  • Mario Gotze (Eintracht Frankfurt)
  • Jonas Hofmann (Borussia Monchengladbach)
  • Julian Brandt (Borussia Dortmund)
  • Leon Goretzka (Bayern Munich)
  • Ilkay Gundogan (Manchester City)
  • Kai Havertz (Chelsea)
  • Jamal Musiala (Bayern Munich)

Forwards

  • Leroy Sane (Bayern Munich)
  • Thomas Muller (Bayern Munich)
  • Serge Gnabry (Bayern Munich)
  • Karim Adeyemi (Borussia Dortmund)
  • Niclas Füllkrug (Werder Bremen)
  • Youssoufa Moukoko (Borussia Dortmund)

This tournament offers redemption to a few of the aforementioned players. The trend of embarrassing moments could end for the European heavyweights. They look to be on the upswing with only one defeat in 15 matches against their new head coach. The trip to Qatar will be the 57-year-old’s toughest challenge yet, but it is the provocation that he was brought in for. They face Japan in their opening game as -227 favorites to win.
