Gervonta Davis and Ryan Garcia Bet Their Purses on Saturday’s Super Fight
The first super fight of 2023 takes place on Saturday, April 22 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas when 23-0 Ryan Garcia steps into the ring to take on 28-0 Gervonta Davis. On Monday, Gervonta and Ryan raised the stakes. The pair decided to bet the entire purse on the result of the fight. So if Garcia wins, Davis must hand over his share of the purse. If Gervonta takes the victory, Ryan must hand over his share. Keep reading to discover how the bet came about and what’s at stake for each boxer. We also tell you where the boxing betting money is going.
Ryan Garcia vs. Gervonta Davis Fight Information
- When: Saturday, April 22 at 8:00 pm ET
- Where: T-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas, NV
- TV: PPV
- Live Stream: Showtime
- Boxing Odds: Davis -256 / Garcia +195
The Bet Went Down During an Instagram Live Stream
Gervonta was co-hosting an Instagram live stream with YouTuber Kai Cenat in front of 189,000 when Garcia called into the stream.
Ryan jumped on the video from his car. Once Ryan got on, things got interesting. Gervonta said, “Yo, you want to bet?”
Garcia said, “Yeah, let’s do it.” Davis asked if they were betting the whole purse. Ryan’s response was, “Let’s do it. The whole purse.” Then Garcia said, “You hear me on the live. Let’s go. Let’s make a contract. Let’s sign it. Both of us.”
Davis then started making a phone call, which we can only presume was to have someone on his team draw up the contracts.
Garcia stands to make $350,000 and Davis $1.5 million from the total purse
The bet sounds like a lot of money is involved, and it is, but it’s not nearly what the two will make on the fight. The purse in a boxing match, especially in a super fight, doesn’t come close to the dollars they paid boxers in the past.
Ryan Garcia will make $350,000 to fight Davis. Gervonta’s cut is $1.5 million. When it comes to the bet, Garcia stands to make much more from Davis than what Gervonta will make from Ryan.
But the pair is still just betting the purse.
The best is significant, but it doesn’t include the 60/40 to Davis/Garcia PPV split
One of the reasons Gervonta Davis was so willing to put up his $1.5 million shares is because Davis is getting 60% of the PPV money that goes to both participant boxers. Garcia is getting 40%, which isn’t bad considering Golden Boy believes at least 2 million pay per view purchases will happen.
So 2 million times $84.99 comes out to $169,980,000, more than enough for Davis to put up his $1.5 mil and Garcia to put up his $350,000.
Betting Money Analysis: All the money going to Gervonta
Davis will step into the ring at a massive height disadvantage. Davis is 5’ 5” and a half. Garcia is 5’ 10”.
But, so far, all the money, and we mean all of it, is landing on Gervonta Davis. It could be because Gervonta has fought taller fighters and prevailed.
It could also be because Ryan Garcia doesn’t have great footwork. He often puts his lead foot in the wrong position and isn’t good moving laterally.
Davis is terrific at moving laterally, which makes Gervonta the choice among many boxing handicappers. Things could change leading up to the fight.
