League of Legends Worlds 2022 Tournament Info

  • Where: various venues across North America
  • When: September 29 – November 5, 2022
  • Where to Tatch: Twitch

The League of Legends World Championships is one of the most viewed Esports events annually, as literally millions of LoL fans witness the culmination of what has been a phenomenal season. Last year, the Worlds 2021 set a new record for most Esports tournament views with over 174 million total hours watched and with the grand final itself garnering over four million concurrent viewers.

Worlds 2022 will take place in four different venues in North America, beginning with the play-in stage in Mexico City from September 29 to October 4. The top four finishers out of the 12 teams from the play-in stage will earn a berth into the group stage, with the final 16 teams left in the field split into four groups. The round-robin stage of the tournament will take place in New York City on October 7-16.

The top two teams out of the four groups will make up the final knockout stage, with the quarterfinals also taking place in NYC on October 20-23. The semifinals will then shift venues over to Atlanta on October 29-30 before the grand final takes place at the Chase Center in San Francisco on November 5.

A massive prize pool worth $2.25 million is at stake in LoL Worlds 2022. This has been the total payout for Worlds since 2019, but Riot Games also adds a portion of their sales for Championship skins to the overall prize pot. In 2018, the total payout amounted to a whopping $6.45 million with digital sales for in-game cosmetics alone taken into account.

Teams to Follow in the LoL Worlds 2022 Tournament

As of this writing, there are three teams considered the odds-on favorites to win the re-designed Summoner’s Trophy this year. China’s JD Gaming and Top Esports, as well as South Korea’s Gen.G, are each priced as +250 co-favorites to become the Worlds 2022 champion.

The United States’ best hope at winning the Summoner’s Trophy, meanwhile, is Cloud9. The team has an uphill battle against history, as no North American team has ever won Worlds in the 11 prior seasons of the event. Nevertheless, Cloud9 is a solid +3,900 sleeper to win it all and finally break NA’s long-standing curse at Worlds.
