Here’s the Pitch for Immediate Improvement
Outside of two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani, Anaheim has been a wasteland for pitchers for several seasons for starters and closers alike. That being said, the Angels must continue to bolster their bullpen, and the recent signing of Atlanta’s unproven prospect Touki Toussaint for pennies is not a good start (cool name, though).
Los Angeles might want to take a closer look at several arms on the market that are likely on their way out from their current teams. Former All-Star starting pitcher Luis Castillo from the Reds is a notable target, especially if Cincinnati isn’t willing to pay for Castillo’s final year of arbitration next season. A couple of closers should also be considered by the Halos considering they could do better than Raisel Iglesias (15 saves, 3.68 ERA, five homers allowed in 29.1 innings). Colorado’s Daniel Bard (16 saves, 2.05 ERA) is a name to considered as a viable upgrade, and former NL wins leader Ian Kennedy is another name that comes to mind as a veteran presence who could serve well in relief as well as in the closer spot in a pinch.
Trout Sent Back Out to the Sea?
It’s been such an underwhelming MLB journey for Mike Trout, who has three AL MVP titles under his belt yet just one postseason appearance all the way back in 2014. The Angels have failed time and again to build around the generational talent who still has a few years left in his prime, and perhaps it’s time for the Angels to finally part ways with their franchise cornerstone, especially with Shohei Ohtani now sharing Trout’s spotlight.
That being said, there are plenty of big-market ballclubs who are more than willing to make a huge offer for Trout’s services the minute that Los Angeles announces that they’re willing to hear out trade offers for the otherworldly outfielder. Boston, San Francisco, the two New York franchises, and even the neighboring Dodgers come to mind as probable, deep-pocketed trade partners.
Shipping Trout will certainly sting Angels fans and some of them might even abandon ship altogether. However, it’s all but guaranteed that any trade package involving Trout will be so massive that the Angels will have so many assets and new pieces to work with that the loss of the future Hall-of-Famer might reap even better rewards down the line. Then again, perhaps the Angels’ own front office is what needs a major overhaul first and foremost before squandering whatever assets and players they traded for, which is commonplace for the struggling franchise already.
