Why bet on the New York Mets?

The Mets are likely to be without a key player in outfielder Starling Marte. He left Saturday’s game with tightness in his left groin and then sat Sunday. The team was awaiting results of an MRI that would determine if Marte has to land on the injured list. Replacing Marte’s bat would be tough. He had been red-hot at the plate for the Mets, batting .394 with a 1.096 on an eight-game hitting streak. Since May 1, the outfielder is hitting .319 with an .885 OPS. Marte previously dealt with quad tightness, which caused him to miss three games in early June during the Mets’ 10-game West Coast trip.

Catcher James McCann also left Saturday’s game with left-side discomfort after he made a tag at the plate and came up gingerly. McCann also sat Sunday and was awaiting MRI results. McCann was just two weeks removed from returning from the IL. He underwent hamate surgery in May and missed six-plus weeks because of it. He has gone 4-for-26 in nine games since his return, but crushed a three-run homer on Friday and said the strength in his wrist was beginning to come back.

Finally, All-Star Jeff McNeil will be placed on the paternity leave list on Monday as he and his wife are expecting the birth of their first child. The Mets’ offense has struggled as of late, and McNeil has been one of their best hitters in 2022, slashing .317/.378/.444 with an .822 OPS.

If this game goes to extras, live bet the Mets as dating to the 2021 season the Mets have won eight straight extra-inning contests. Their last loss in extras was 7-6 on September 14, 2021 against the Cardinals at Citi Field. Their eight-game extra-inning win streak is tied for the second-longest such streak in team history.

New York’s Francisco Lindor and Pete Alonso became the first pair of teammates with 60 RBI this season. They are the first pair of Mets teammates to have 60 or more RBI before the All-Star break since Carlos Beltrán and David Wright in 2008.

Why bet on the Atlanta Braves?

The surging Braves have been the hottest team in baseball since June, which has allowed the defending World Series champions to close the gap in the East. It was not too long ago that Atlanta trailed the Mets by 10 1/2 games in the division.

Atlanta outfielder Adam Duvall is on the paternity leave list but could be back Monday. He’s hitting .206 with 10 homers and 32 RBIs.

Great pitching matchup Monday with three-time Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer of the Mets and potential 2022 winner Max Fried on the mound.

Scherzer (5-1, 2.26 ERA) returned from a long injury list stint last Tuesday and didn’t factor into the decision, scattering two hits over six scoreless innings. He struck out 11 without walking a batter. Scherzer set season high in Ks while firing 57 of 79 pitches for strikes, including 15 swinging strikes. It was Scherzer’s 28th career start with at least 10 strikeouts and no walks, the second most in MLB history.

Scherzer is 10-9 with a 3.88 ERA in 157.2 career innings vs. the Braves. He last faced them in the regular season on September 1, 2021, while a member of the Dodgers and threw six scoreless innings, allowing three hits and striking out nine batters without issuing a walk.

The lefty Fried (9-2, 2.52 ERA) tossed six scoreless innings while scattering five hits in last Wednesday’s 3-0 win over the Cardinals. Fried struck out four while walking one in a sharp overall performance. He needed just 82 pitches (56 strikes) to complete his six innings and has now yielded one or no runs in six of his last eight trips to the mound. Fried is 5-3 with a 2.80 ERA in 74 career innings vs. the Mets.
