Where’s Ja?!

Considering how the Grizzlies lost to the Warriors in Game 4 by just three points and had a double-digit lead in the fourth quarter, you’d think that the Grizzlies were in full force. However, Memphis was without star player Ja Morant, who missed Monday’s game with a bone bruise and is doubtful to return in the series.

Morant’s injury has been both a bane and a boon for the Grizzlies. On one hand, they proved that they can compete with Golden State even without their best player on the floor. Thus, earning them decent (+3.5) odds as underdogs to win Game 5 Wednesday. On the other hand, the absence of Morant’s leadership and clutch performances ultimately led to the Grizz’s late collapse in Game 4. The question remains: who can fill in the void that Ja left?

Balancing Size and Speed

Five Memphis players finished with double-digit scoring performances in Game 4, including huge contributions from Morant’s backup in Tyus Jones (19 points, six rebounds, five assists) and Kyle Anderson off the bench (17 points, eight boards).

Anderson, standing at 6-foot-9, was one of several relatively tall Grizz players that gave the Warriors mismatches on the defensive end. Steven Adams (6’11’) started on Monday and had 10 points and 15 rebounds in his first full game back form injury, while Jaren Jackson Jr. (also 6’11”) had a team-high 21 points. That being said, Grizzlies head coach Taylor Jenkins needs to continue countering Golden State’s lineups with his team’s own brand of size and versatility that worked like a charm in Game 4.

Keep the Defensive Intensity Up

Despite Monday’s loss, the Grizzlies still had a sound defensive performance. They held the high-scoring Warriors to just 40 percent shooting from the field and just 9-of-37 from three-point range (24.3 percent). In fact, Golden State missed all 15 of their first three-point attempts in Game 4.

Turnovers were also key for the Grizz, who had 16 takeaways in Game 4 and with 11 of them coming in the first quarter. Unfortunately, their defense started to crumble late as the Warriors slowly began their comeback. In turn, the Grizzlies must keep their defensive prowess at a high level in Game 5 if they’re to stand a chance at extending the series for another must-win showdown in Game 6 at Chase Center.
