Top MLB Betting Picks of the Week – June 5th, 2023
The San Diego Padres have barely had their four star hitters together in Juan Soto, Manny Machado, Fernando Tatis Jr. and Xander Bogaerts – due to injury or suspension. Bogaerts is the latest dealing with a malady as he left Saturday’s win over the Cubs with a wrist injury and sat Sunday but hopes to avoid a trip to the injured list. Here are two intriguing early-week matchups around the majors. Check back for MLB odds.

Series finale between NL Central rivals and the MLB debut of Reds lefty Andrew Abbott, the No. 95 overall prospect in the minors and No. 6 on Cincinnati. He will start for young ace Hunter Greene, who is dealing with some hip issues but will not land on the injured list for now. Manager David Bell said that the Reds have “no major concern” with Greene’s hip.
The Brewers probably don’t mind missing Greene as last week he notched his 250th career strikeout, making him the fourth-fastest pitcher by innings (184) to reach the milestone as a starter since the mound was moved to its current distance in 1893, per Elias Sports Bureau.
Abbott will join shortstop Matt McLain (No. 5 in organization, No. 90 overall) and lefty starter Brandon Williamson (No. 10 in organization) as recent call-ups to the big leagues for their debuts. The Reds’ No. 14 prospect, right-handed starter Levi Stoudt, was up for two brief stints earlier this season. Abbott was Cincinnati’s second-round pick in the 2021 Draft out of Virginia – worked as a reliever in his first three years of college before moving into the rotation his final year.
The southpaw Abbott has dominated the upper minors this season, with a 2.50 ERA in 10 starts (54 innings) split between the Double-A and Triple-A levels. In 15 2/3 innings at Double-A prior to his promotion to Triple-A, Abbott struck out a ridiculous 64.3% of batters faced. His phenomenal strikeout numbers have continued in Triple-A as well, as he’s punched out 34.8% of batters in 38 1/3 innings of work. Abbott is throwing four pitches. His fastball has been working in the 91-94 mph range and he’s touched 96. His change up works in the mid-80s, while the slider and curveball both work in the 79-82 mph range.
Milwaukee starts veteran Julio Teheran (1-1, 0.82 ERA), who was basically signed off the street not too long ago. This will be his third start of the year. Teheran got the win last Wednesday after tossing six innings and allowing one unearned run against Toronto. He scattered four hits and failed to strike out a batter while issuing no walks. Teheran, who signed with Milwaukee as a free agent on May 25 after opting out of his contract with San Diego on May 22, is 3-4 with a 4.14 ERA in 9 career starts against the Reds.
MLB Betting Pick: Reds
Chicago White Sox vs. New York Yankees
- When: Tuesday, June 6, 2023, 7:05 PM ET
- Where: Yankee Stadium, New York City, NY
- TV: NBCSCH, YES
- Radio: WLS-AM 890 (White Sox) // WFAN 101.9 FM (Yankees)
- Live Stream: MLB.tv
- MLB Betting Odds: TBA
Chicago is just 20-33 vs. the Yankees since 2014, including 9-16 on the road. It has lost six of the last eight season series (1-6-1).
The Yankees got healthier over the weekend in activating DH and third baseman Josh Donaldson, both former league MVPs, off the injured list, but then again center fielder Harrison Bader is back on the injured list. He made his season debut May 2 off another injury and hit .267/.295/.511 with six home runs in 26 games. Bader has also played his typically excellent defense, so much so that he is second among all center fielders with five outs above average despite limited action.
Aaron Judge is back atop the AL lead in homers with 19. The Yankees have gone 158-50 in his career when he homers. Since 2020, the Yankees are 86-21 in those games. They are 14-1 this season when he homers. Closer Clay Holmes has not allowed a run in 13 of his last 14 appearances (since 5/6), going 3-0 with two saves and a 0.63 ERA (14.1IP, 1ER) and 18K in that span.
Chicago is about as healthy as it has been all season – the White Sox have been one of the AL’s top disappointments so perhaps things are about to change. The White Sox start Lucas Giolito (4-4, 4.08 ERA) on the mound Tuesday. He is 4-4 with a 3.34 ERA and .220 (48-218) opponents average over his last 10 starts (six quality).
Giolito has gone 2-2 with a 6.30 ERA (14 ER/20.0 IP) and .268 (32-82) opponents average in four career starts vs. the Yankees. He earned the win in his only career start at Yankee Stadium on 4/12/19, allowing six runs (four earned) on six hits with six strikeouts over five innings pitched.
Lefty Nestor Cortes (5-2, 5.16) is scheduled for New York. Cortes (5-2) allowed two runs on five hits and three walks while striking out six over five innings and earning the win over the Mariners last Tuesday. Cortes blanked the Mariners over the first four innings, but a leadoff walk and a pair of doubles plated two runs in the fifth and Cortes was replaced after getting through the frame with 101 pitches. Cortes has tossed at least 5.0 innings in six of his last eight starts after not doing so in his first four starts this season.
Cortes is 4-0 with a 2.63 ERA in 24 career innings against the White Sox.
MLB Betting Pick: Yankees
