Phoenix Suns vs. Memphis Grizzlies

  • When: Monday, January 16, 2023, 6:00 PM ET
  • Where: FedExForum, Memphis, TN
  • TV: TNT, BSSE-MEM, BSAZ
  • Radio: KMVP-FM 98.7 FM (Suns) // 590 The Fan (Grizzlies)

  • NBA Betting Odds: Suns (+10) // Grizzlies (-10)

TNT has this matchup at 6 p.m. ET. Memphis always hosts a game on the MLK Jr. holiday. The National Civil Rights Museum is in the city and traces the history of the civil rights movement in the United States from the 17th century to the present. The museum is built around the former Lorraine Motel, which was the site of the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. in 1968; King died at St. Joseph’s Hospital.

It will be Phoenix’s last trip to Memphis this season unless the teams meet in the playoffs. The Suns won the first meeting there 125-108 on Dec. 27. Duane Washington Jr. scored a career-high 26 points. Eight Suns scored in double figures. Jock Landale scored 16, and Deandre Ayton had 15 points and 10 rebounds. Chris Paul finished with 14 points and six assists.

Devin Booker, Landry Shamet, Cameron Payne and Cam Johnson were all out. Those four and Paul will all be out Monday. Johnson (right knee surgery) said that he’s looking forward to returning to action “very soon” after the Suns’ current road trip. Johnson has been out since early November due to a torn meniscus in his right knee but may be back later this week.

Ja Morant led Memphis with 34 points in the last meeting. Desmond Bane was the only other Memphis player in double figures with 14 before Grizzlies coach Taylor Jenkins cleared his bench midway through the fourth quarter.

Memphis enters this one on a nine-game winning streak following a 130-112 win at Indiana on Saturday. Morant had 23 points and 10 assists. Brandon Clarke had 11 points, three steals, two rebounds and two assists in 19 minutes off the bench. Clarke rejoined the rotation after missing the Grizzlies’ first six games of January with the hip injury.

Phoenix comes off a 121-116 loss in Minnesota on Friday. Damion Lee had a career night with 31 points and six rebounds. He had never even scored 30 in an NBA game previously. Miles Bridges had 24 points. Deandre Ayton returned after missing two games with a left ankle sprain and had 11 points and 11 rebounds. The Suns are 6-17, the third-fewest wins in the NBA, since ending November with a 15-6 record.

NBA Betting Pick: Suns

Philadelphia 76ers vs. LA Clippers

  • When: Tuesday, January 17, 2023, 10:00 PM ET
  • Where: Crypto.com Arena, Los Angeles, CA
  • TV: TNT, NBCSP+
  • Radio: 97.5 The Fanatic (76ers) // KLAC 570 (Clippers)
  • Live Stream: NBA League Pass
  • NBA Betting Odds: TBA

It’s a potential NBA Finals preview shown on TNT. Of course, Sixers coach Doc Rivers used to be in the same role with the Clippers. Rivers is the winningest coach in Clippers history with a 365-208 record during his tenure.

On Dec. 23, the Clippers lost 119-114 in Philadelphia. Joel Embiid scored 44 points, James Harden had a career-high 21 assists in a triple-double and the 76ers overcame a 20-point first-half deficit. Harden, who tied Wilt Chamberlain and Maurice Cheeks for the franchise game assist record, also had 20 points and 11 rebounds.

Kawhi Leonard had 28 points on 12-of-19 shooting for Los Angeles. Paul George added 22 points and Norman Powell had 21. The 76ers limited George to five points in the second half. It’s not clear if George will play here. He missed a fifth straight game Sunday against the Rockets due to right hamstring soreness.

After missing the majority of 2021-22, he has played well in 30 games this season. The former Fresno State star has averages of 23.7 points, 6.0 rebounds, 5.1 assists and 1.5 steals per contest. PG is shooting 45.1% from the field and 38.5% from the three-point range.

Point guard John Wall has been ruled out for at least two weeks due to an abdominal strain. Wall has averaged 11.4 points, 5.2 assists and 40.7% shooting in 22.2 minutes per game this season. He was hurt in Friday’s loss to Dallas after throwing down a big dunk.

“I haven’t jumped like that when somebody contested me in probably like three years to be honest,” said Wall, who had only played in a total of 40 games in his previous three seasons. “… I think I just stretched it as much as I could when I dunked it.”

Terance Mann recently moved into the starting point guard role, so Wall’s injury won’t impact him. Clippers coach Ty Lue said he will turn to former starting point guard Reggie Jackson to take over Wall’s backup point guard role. Jackson had recently fallen out of the rotation after Lue inserted Mann into the starting lineup on Jan. 6 against Minnesota.

Philadelphia leads the all-time series 76-61.

NBA Betting Pick: Clippers
