Cleveland Cavaliers vs. Milwaukee Bucks

Two of the best teams in the Eastern Conference meet on Wednesday, although neither may be at full strength. Cleveland guard Donovan Mitchell did practice Tuesday after missing Sunday’s game with an ankle injury so he might go. Mitchell has tallied 30+ points in 8 of his 11 games this season and is averaging career-highs in points (31.6 PPG, 4th in NBA), assists (6.1 APG), rebounds (4.7 RPG) and minutes (39.1 MPG, 1st in NBA).

All-Star center Jarrett Allen didn’t practice Tuesday due to his own ankle issue that kept him out Sunday so he will be listed as questionable. Allen ranks T-4th in the NBA in rebounds per game this season (11.5 RPG) and T-4th in the NBA in double-doubles (7).

Cleveland enters on a four-game skid after Sunday’s loss to the Wolves but Darius Garland finished with a career-high 51 PTS on 16-30 (.533) shooting from the field, including 10-14 (.714) shooting from beyond the arc. His 10 three-pointers were a career-high and he became the 3rd Cavs player in team history with 10+ threes in a game (Kyrie Irving and C.J. Miles). Garland scored a career-high 27 of his points in the 4th quarter, including 6-10 (.600) shooting from beyond the arc, marking the 2nd time scoring 20+ points in a quarter for his career. His 27 4th quarter points were the most points in a fourth quarter in team history and the 2nd-most points in any quarter by a Cavs player in team history (Kevin Love, 34 PTS in 1st. Q on Nov. 23, 2016). Garland is the 10th player in the last 10 seasons to record 50+ PTS at age 22 or younger in the NBA.

Not clear if the Bucks will have point guard Jrue Holiday as he has missed a few games with a right ankle sprain. Holiday has been “the straw that stirs the drink” ever since he arrived in Milwaukee. The Bucks are 97-38 (.718) in games started by Holiday since his arrival. Khris Middleton, Pat Connaughton, and Joe Ingles are still waiting to make their season debuts. Also Grayson Allen and Wesley Matthews are day-to-day with new ailments.

Cleveland is playing Milwaukee for the first of four matchups this season. The Cavs have won three straight games over Milwaukee since Dec. 2021. The Cavs are 11-5 over Central Division opponents in their last 16 opportunities.

Irving was initially suspended on November 3 for “harmful impact of his conduct” relating to a social media post about a book and movie that contains antisemitic ideas. It remains unclear when he will return to the floor.

The athletic guard is making strides in his recovery, but Billups said Monday that there is still no concrete timetable regarding Payton getting cleared to play. Payton averaged career highs of 7.1 points, 3.5 rebounds and 1.35 steals for the Warriors last season. He recorded three steals in both Game 5 and Game 6 of the 2022 NBA Finals.
