Top NBA Betting Picks of the Week (April 4th, 2023)

Boston Celtics vs. Philadelphia 76ers

  • When: Tuesday, April 4, 2023, 7:00 PM ET
  • Where: Wells Fargo Center, Philadelphia, PA
  • TV: NBCSB, TNT
  • Radio: 98.5 The Sports Hub (Celtics) // 97.5 The Fanatic (76ers)
  • Live Stream: NBA League Pass
  • NBA Betting Odds: TBA

TNT has this national telecast. Boston is second in the East, two games behind Milwaukee. Philadelphia is third, three games back of Boston. Thus, it’s likely these clubs finish 2-3 in the East in some order and thus potentially face off in the conference finals.

The Celtics have won five of six and been off since Friday’s 122-114 win over Utah a night after shocking the Bucks by 41 points. Leading 57-51 out of the break against Utah, Boston emerged on an 8-0 run in a span of just 61 seconds to more than double their lead to 14 points and that was that. Jayson Tatum had 39 points and zero turnovers, becoming the first player in NBA history to score at least 39 points in consecutive games without committing a turnover.

Tatum posted his 16th game with at least 30 points and 11 rebounds this year, which ranks fourth in the league, and is the most such games by a Celtics player in a single season in franchise history, breaking his tie with Larry Bird, 15 (1984-85; 1987-88). In his last two games, Tatum has scored 79 points on only 35 field-goal attempts. The only other player in NBA history to score as many points on fewer field goal attempts in a two-game span is Philly’s Joel Embiid (80 pts, 34 FGA in January 2021).

Jaylen Brown had just 12 points on 5-for-19 shooting vs. the Jazz. Brown’s 26.3 shooting percentage from the floor was his worst since Feb. 8, when he went 2-for-9 in a victory over the 76ers. It was also just his third time over the last month that he failed to knock down anything from beyond the arc. Center Robert Williams didn’t play Friday but should here.

The NBA MVP Award is Embiid’s to lose for the Sixers. They come off a 117-104 loss in Milwaukee on Sunday. Tyrese Maxey had 29 points to lead the 76ers. Embiid had 28. James Harden had 11 points and just six assists. It’s been a mixed bag for Harden since his return from a four game absence. Since his return, he’s averaged 16.3 points, 9.7 assists and 3.8 rebounds with a turnover rate of 4.3 per game.

Boston looks for the four-game sweep of Philadelphia. The teams last met on Feb. 25 and the Celtics won 110-107 on the road. Tatum hit the go-ahead three-pointer with 1.3 seconds left. He finished with 18 points, 13 rebounds and six assists to help the Celtics rally from down 15 in the third. Embiid finished with 41 points and 12 rebounds.

NBA Betting Pick: Celtics

Sacramento Kings vs. Dallas Mavericks

How unusual could this NBA season be if the Kings are in the playoffs – they have ended the NBA’s longest postseason drought – and the Mavericks miss the play-in tournament entirely despite having the superstar duo of Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving?

There’s talk the Mavs could even shut down both Doncic and Irving for the remainder of the season. The Mavericks are currently on the outside looking into the play-in and are just 1-7 over their last eight games. Despite giving up some of their better defensive pieces to acquire Irving, the hope was that the pairing of Luka and Kyrie would boost the Mavericks’ offensive firepower.

However, the Mavs’ offense hasn’t been able to overcome the defensive shortcomings and a team that was fifth in the West seed a few weeks ago is in danger of missing the playoffs for the first time since Luka’s rookie season. Dallas is 7-12 in the 19 games Irving has played this season for the Mavericks.

It might be more beneficial to at least enter the lottery and hope to win it than simply get into the play-in tournament and be one-and-done. Sacramento sits third in the West and probably isn’t moving from that spot, meaning the Kings would face the No. 6 seed in the first round of the playoffs. That No. 6 club could be either Los Angeles team, Golden State or New Orleans.

Kings guard De’Aaron Fox is proving to be one of the league’s top scorers this season in crunch time as the Kings guard is averaging 5.0 points per game in those instances, which ranks third in the NBA. His 7.9 points per outing in the fourth quarter ranks sixth in the Association.

The Mavericks hold an all-time record of 100-78 (.562) against the Kings franchise. The teams have split two games this season, both in Sacramento in February. Dallas is 60-29 all-time at home against Sacramento (compared to 40-49 on the road).

Doncic is averaging 27.4 points (.468 FG%), 10.1 rebounds and 8.5 assists in 12 career games against the Kings. The four-time All-Star has recorded at least 20 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists in 10 of those 12 games.

NBA Betting Pick: Mavs if Doncic and Irving play
