Buffalo Sabres vs. Toronto Maple Leafs

  • Where: KeyBank Center, Buffalo, NY
  • TV: SNO, SNW, SNP, TVAS, MSG-B
  • Radio: 630 CHED (Sabres) // TSN 1050 (Maple Leafs)

Two of the best offensive teams in the league face off. The problem for Buffalo is goaltending as it has dropped four in a row – including allowing a whopping 10 goals on Thursday vs. Dallas. Sixteen Stars skaters had at least one point in the team’s best offensive output in 14 years. The Sabres followed that with a 2-1 home OT loss to the Rangers on Saturday.

Buffalo had a handful of chances to score the go-ahead goal in the final minute but couldn’t beat Igor Shesterkin. Dylan Cozens had a chance from the slot that Shesterkin turned away and Victor Olofsson had another chance at the side of the cage that was sent wide. Buffalo is now 8-5 in overtime games and 10-6-5 in one-goal games this season.

The line of JJ Peterka, Dylan Cozens and Jack Quinn was +reunited against the Rangers. The trio combined for 16 shot attempts.

“You can see when they’re fresh, they go. Today they were going,” Coach Don Granato said. “They probably deserved to score a couple. They were dynamic.”

Toronto won its second in a row Saturday, 7-4 over Edmonton. The Maple Leafs scored four consecutive goals in a 5:59 span in the second period after falling behind by two goals. Toronto star Auston Matthews has now scored at least 30 goals in each of his first seven seasons. Matthews scored a power-play goal in the third period to extend the Maple Leafs’ lead to 6-3. He would also add an assist on John Tavares’ first goal.

Toronto is 2-0 vs. Buffalo. The teams last played on Feb. 21 in New York and the Leafs won 6-3. Ryan O’Reilly scored twice on Toronto’s first two shots on net and added an empty-net goal to cap a career-best five-point outing. However, O’Reilly is now on long-term injured reserve. Mitch e Marner’s five assists tied a franchise record for most in a road game, shared by Pep Kelly, Babe Pratt and Borje Salming.

NHL Betting Pick: Maple Leafs

Boston Bruins vs. Chicago Blackhawks

  • When: Tuesday, March 14, 2023, 8:30 PM ET
  • Where: Enterprise Center, St. Louis, MO
  • TV: NBCSCH, NESN
  • Radio: 98.5 The Sports Hub (Bruins) // WGN 720 (Blackhawks)
  • Live Stream: NHL Live
  • NHL Betting Odds: TBA

The Bruins could be the biggest road favorites of the entire season in this Original Six matchup as the Blackhawks are in full tank mode. The Bruins, meanwhile, needed only 64 games to reach 50 wins, beating the record of 66 set by the 1995-96 Detroit Red Wings and matched by the 2018-19 Lightning. The Bruins also are the first team this season to clinch a playoff berth.

The current record for most wins overall in a season (62) was set by those Detroit and Tampa Bay teams. Neither team won the Stanley Cup in its respective record-setting season, as the Red Wings lost to the Colorado Avalanche in the Western Conference finals, and the Lightning were swept in the first round by the Columbus Blue Jackets. The 1976-77 Canadiens hold the overall points record with 132. The Canadiens won the Cup that season — over the Bruins.

Boston could be down one key player Tuesday in blueliner Hampus Lindholm. He sat out Sunday against Detroit with a foot injury but it’s nothing serious. Lindholm has picked up eight goals, 42 points, 133 shots on net, 77 blocks, 63 hits and a plus-40 rating in 64 games this season.

Should be likely Vezina winner Linus Ullmark in net. Ullmark turned aside 29 shots in Saturday’s 3-2 win over the Red Wings. Detroit grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first period, but Ullmark slammed the door shut the rest of the way. Ullmark has won a career-high 33 games including his last eight starts, posting a 1.85 GAA and .944 save percentage during that streak.

Chicago enters having lost seven of eight and in full tank mode. Taylor Raddysh tallied the lone Chicago goal in Saturday’s 3-1 loss at Tampa Bay, where he was initially drafted. He now has 17 goals on the season and 30 points. Due to a non-COVID illness for Alex Stalock, Petr Mrazek took the net in back-to-back games.

The Hawks were routed in Boston 6-1 on Nov. 19. David Pastrnak scored two goals, and Patrice Bergeron, Jake DeBrusk, Taylor Hall and David Krejci also scored, and Charlie McAvoy had four assists. Jeremy Swayman made 17 saves. Raddysh scored a power-play goal for Chicago and Mrazek stopped 37 shots.
