Will Phil Mickelson Play at the 2022 Masters Tournament in Augusta?

By Carlos Chacon

Most of the buzz surrounding the 2022 Masters Tournament revolves around the tentative participation of two golf legends: Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson. Woods just recently announced that he’s about to make his long-awaited comeback to the PGA TOUR at Augusta this week, whereas Mickelson’s status is more complicated, to say the least.

Nitrobetting is here to give the best tips from the betting greens and fairways. This time, let’s find out whether or not Phil Mickelson will be playing at the 2022 Masters, as well as the latest golf odds for the first major tournament of the 2021-22 PGA TOUR season.

Phil Mickelson’s Chances of Playing the 2022 Masters Tournament

Lefty’s Last Trip to Augusta

Phil Mickelson last played in Augusta National the previous year, finishing tied for 21st in the 2021 Masters Tournament. The 51-year-old legend has not had a top-20 finish in The Masters since 2015 wherein he was tied for the runner-up position of the event.

Mickelson is a three-time Masters champion and wore the illustrious green jacket in 2004, 2006, and 2010. He has a whopping 15 top-10 finishes in The Masters dating back to 1995; his first breakout year in Augusta.

Due to circumstances outside the golfing action on the courses and links, Mickelson will not be participating in this year’s edition of The Masters.

Mickelson came under fire for his criticism regarding the Saudi Arabia-funded LIV Golf Invitational Series and the PGA TOUR’s stance on that event. On February 22, the six-time major tournament winner stated that he “desperately need(ed) some time away” from the TOUR to reflect upon his actions that have ramifications beyond the sport.

Things have been quiet from Mickelson’s camp since. So quiet that his friend and fellow PGA TOUR standout, Bryson DeChambeau, said that Mickelson has “gone dark” and has not communicated with his peers about the subject. Here’s hoping that Lefty overcomes this socio-political obstacle in his otherwise revered PGA TOUR career.

Latest 2022 Masters Tournament Odds

As of this writing, Jon Rahm is the odds-on favorite to win the 2022 Masters at (+900). Rahm won his first and only major tournament in 2021 in the U.S. Open and his best finish at Augusta was a solo fourth-place finish in 2018.

Mickelson would’ve warranted solid sleeper value had he been eligible to play this week. Meanwhile, fellow World Golf Hall of Fame member Tiger Woods is about to make a comeback of his own. Woods is currently priced at (+5000) and will be making his return to the PGA TOUR for the first time since his last start at Augusta in the 2020 edition of The Masters.
