Pittsburgh vs. Virginia NCAAB Odds and Preview – February 13th, 2024

Important college basketball game from the ACC on Tuesday night, as Pittsburgh needs a victory as an NCAA Tournament bubble team, while No. 21 Virginia is only a game out of first in the league and could be tied by the end of the night with a victory. The Wahoos are solid home favorites.

This is the only scheduled meeting of the season between these teams. UVA is 19-5 all-time vs. Pitt in the series that dates to 1957. Virginia has won 15 of the last 17 games in the series, including a six-game win streak in Charlottesville. However, Pitt won the last meeting on Jan. 3, 2023, by a score of 68-65 at the Peterson Events Center in Pittsburgh. Virginia entered that one on an eight-game winning streak as well.

Why Bet on the Pittsburgh Panthers?

Pittsburgh (15-8, 6-6 ACC) has been off since it was a 67-64 winner at NC State on Feb. 7, the Panthers’ fifth win in their past six games. Freshman guard Jaland Lowe scored a team-high 20 points and sealed the game with a pair of free throws with five seconds remaining. Blake Hinson added 16 points, including 13 in the opening half, while Carlton Carrington added 12 points, seven rebounds and three assists.

Pitt won the rebounding battle 37-28 to move to 13-2 on the season when outrebounding the opposition. The Panthers rank second in the ACC in rebound margin. They went just 8-of-24 (.333) from the field, including 1-of-12 (.083) from three-point range. Pitt used a terrific effort (18-of-20, .900) from the foul line, including 11-of-11 from freshman guards Lowe and Carrington, to offset the shooting woes from the field.

The Panthers are 5-2 on the season in road games with wins at Duke, NC State, Georgia Tech, Louisville, and West Virginia. Pitt has won 12 road games over the past two seasons. Pitt leads the ACC in three-point field goals (9.13 3pg.) and have made 10 or more threes in a game 11 times.

Hinson has scored in double figures in 20 games with nine 20+ point games. He ranks among the ACC leaders in scoring (5th – 17.9 ppg.), three-pointers (1st – 77), and three-point percentage (T-5th – .414). Ishmael Leggett has emerged as one of the top sixth men in the ACC averaging 13.5 points and 4.7 rebounds per game off the bench over the past six contests. Carrington ranks second among ACC freshmen in scoring (13.6 ppg.), rebounds (5.2 rpg.), and assists (4.2 apg.), and third in three-point field goals per game (1.7 3pg.).

Virginia enters on an eight-game winning streak to finally get into the AP Top 25. The Cavs were 80-76 winners at Florida State on Saturday. UVA went ahead on a putback by sophomore guard Isaac McKneely with 15:55 left in the first half and never relinquished the lead. On a night when the Seminoles shot 33 free throws and made 26 of them, Virginia still secured a hard-earned win, thanks in no small part to its offensive efficiency.

McKneely had a career-high 29 points and was 8 for 12 from the floor, including 5 for 7 from behind the arc. McKneely (12.3 ppg) leads the team in 3-pointers (59) and 3-point percentage (48%).

“He is only in his second year, and he’s getting more assertive and looking for his shot, has deep range, but I like that he put it on the deck a little more, which you have to, and he’s having a heck of a year, and he’s a good one. And I thought that was tonight, he’s had a few coming out parties, but tonight he was really good in terms of showing what he could do in big-time spots,” Coach Tony Bennett said of McKneely.

Reece Beekman added 21 points and a game-high five assists. Forward Jake Groves came off the bench to contribute 10 points. Groves is 16 of 22 from 3-point range the past five games. Virginia is now 50-1 all-time when scoring 80 or more points (4-0 in 2023-24) under Bennett. UVA led 34-30 at the half, improving to 18-0 when leading after the first stanza this season.

Virginia’s eight-game ACC winning streak is the longest in the league, and it owns the nation’s longest home winning streak at 23 games. UVA has held 48 straight ACC opponents to fewer than 70 points at John Paul Jones Arena. Beekman needs six steals to pass Othell Wilson (222 steals from 1981-84) for first all-time at UVA. Ryan Dunn (9.0 ppg) leads UVA in rebounding (7.1 rpg), and blocked shots (2.1 bpg), and team-high five double-doubles.

Virginia ranks first nationally in turnovers per game (8.4) and assist/turnover ratio (1.90), second in scoring defense (57.6 ppg), ninth in turnover margin (4.8), 10th in fouls per game (13.8), 12th in field goal percentage defense (39.4), 15th in 3-point percentage (38.1) and 34th in blocks per game (4.9).
