Raiders vs. Cowboys 2021 NFL Week 12 Odds, Analysis and Prediction

By Hank Blaine

The Dallas Cowboys partly became America’s Team because they have played on the Thanksgiving holiday pretty much every year since the mid-1960s. They host the struggling Las Vegas Raiders this Thursday in Week 12.

This is the 13th all-time meeting between two of the NFL’s most popular and culturally relevant franchises and they have split the first 12. The teams last met on Dec. 17, 2017, where the Cowboys won 20-17. Dallas has won three of the last four games in the series. This is the Cowboys’ 54th game on Thanksgiving and they are 31-21-1 but have lost three of the past four. Sunday will be the Raiders’ eighth appearance on Thanksgiving with a 3-4 overall record.

Why Bet on the Las Vegas Raiders?

Las Vegas has completely fallen apart in a three-game losing streak under interim coach Rich Bisaccia – he took over a handful of weeks ago when coach Jon Gruden resigned in disgrace. Bisaccia is former Cowboys special teams coach. On Sunday, the Raiders lost at home to Cincinnati 32-13 thanks to 16 unanswered points allowed in the fourth quarter.

Las Vegas quarterback Derek Carr ranks second in the NFL with 3,041 passing yards this season and became the fourth quarterback with at least 3,000 passing yards in each of his first eight seasons in NFL history. Carr enters Thursday with 29,937 career passing yards and with 63 on Thanksgiving, he would become the fifth quarterback to reach 30,000 passing yards in his first eight seasons.

Defensively, Vegas has one of the top front sevens in the entire NFL. Maxx Crosby is having an All-Pro caliber season with 7 sacks, 66 pressures, and the highest edge rusher grade in the league according to Pro Football Focus. The Raiders’ front seven owns the highest pass rush grade as a unit on PFF (83.9).

The Raiders are quite healthy for this time of year. Kicker Daniel Carlson returned as an estimated full participant Tuesday after missing Monday’s walkthrough due to illness. Guard John Simpson (ribs) was upgraded to limited.

Why Bet on the Dallas Cowboys?

The Cowboys may be down their two star receivers, as Amari Cooper is on the Reserve/COVID-19 list and CeeDee Lamb suffered a concussion in last Sunday’s 19-9 loss against the Chiefs that could potentially cause him to miss Thursday’s matchup. Cooper is for sure out. Lamb has not missed a game in his two years with the Cowboys. Sunday marked the first game Cooper has missed since he joined the team in a 2018 trade from the Raiders.

Dallas will see the return of left tackle Tyron Smith. Smith practiced on a limited basis last week and was a game-time decision against the Chiefs, but ultimately he was inactive for the third straight game because of an ankle injury. Terence Steele again started in Smith’s place. Running back Ezekiel Elliott banged up his knee in that loss to Kansas City but will play.

Elliott has at least 120 scrimmage yards in three of his four career games on Thanksgiving and has seven touchdowns (six rushing, one receiving) in eight career Thursday games. Elliott needs 101 scrimmage yards for his sixth-consecutive season with at least 1,000 scrimmage yards and he leads all players with 9,240 scrimmage yards since he entered the NFL in 2016.

Dallas QB Dak Prescott in five home starts this season has 15 touchdowns (14 passing, one rushing) with two interceptions for a 118.1 rating and aims for his sixth in a row at home with at least two touchdown passes. The Cowboys have scored at least 35 points in nine of Prescott’s last 10 home starts.
