Son Heung-Min 2022 FIFA World Cup Preview

By Jeff Stinger

When Son Heung-Min debuted in the Brazil 2016 FIFA World Cup, he was far from the player he is right now. The South Korean was only in his first season with Bayer Leverkusen following three years with Hamburger SV. Nevertheless, that didn’t stop him from becoming the youngest South Korean player to score at a World Cup at 21.

He enters the stage as a more mature player. The 30-year-old captains the South Korean national team with flying colors following fruitful campaigns with Tottenham Hotspur. With an impressive build-up, Nitrobetting shares this 2022 FIFA World Cup Player Spotlight: Son Heung-Min.

2022 FIFA World Cup Player Spotlight: Son Heung-Min

Multitalented

Son withholds a flexible style of play who can play in any attacking position. He can play winger, second striker, or up top. We’ve even seen him in situations where he covers the duties of attacking midfielder or wing-back. The Chuncheon native did reiterate that he doesn’t care where he plays as long as he’s in the game.

The captain is known for a deadly weak foot with explosive pace, good positional sense, and close control with clinical finishing. All of these elements make him an effective piece during counter-attacks. Furthermore, he has drawn praise from teammates for his selfless nature and active role on defense, providing assists and goal-scoring opportunities.

A goalscorer at heart

Son Heung-Min has an affinity for scoring goals. He comes in as a +8,000 top goalscorer winner in the World Cup. With 33 goals to his name in 102 appearances for South Korea, we know that the Tottenham forward is likely to have a couple of goals in November. Furthermore, his performance for his current club, Tottenham, includes 93 goals in 238 appearances. These are numbers unheard of for Asian players in the European league. It goes without saying that his caliber of talent is not to be missed in the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

An uplifting 2018 FIFA World Cup campaign

During the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, Son executed an injury-time goal in a 2-1 defeat to Mexico in their second match of the first round. In the following game, Son closed their campaign with an upset victory over defending champions Germany, sending the European giants home. It was a shocking win for the East Asian nation and possibly the most memorable victory in South Korean soccer history.

Although they failed to make it to the second stage of the previous World Cup, South Korea made sure to show everyone what they’re capable of. As +900 Group H winners, we expect how the side will fare against more successful teams such as Portugal and Uruguay.
