By Hank Blaine

The 2022 French Open starts on Sunday, May 22, and runs through Sunday, June 5. This week, most top players have taken the bench to prepare for the second major tournament of the year. Other tennis players are back to work in the Geneva Open on the ATP and the Internationaux de Strasbourg on the WTA. Check out the top tennis betting matchups for Wednesday, May 18.

Top Tennis Betting Picks of the Week (May 17th, 2022)

ATP – 2022 Gonet Geneva Open

Joao Sousa vs. Nikoloz Basilashvili

In his first Geneva Open match, veteran Joao Sousa played a very good match. He dominated from beginning to end, beating Pablo Andujar 6-1, 6-4. Nikoloz Basilashvili, another veteran on the ATP Tour, also played well. But Basilashvili’s opponent, Facundo Bagnis, retired after losing the first set 6-4. It’s difficult to know in what form Basilashvili is. Sousa should have enough in the tank to win this.

Tennis Betting Pick: Joao Sousa

Cristopher O’Connell vs. Reilly Opelka

Australian Cristopher O’Connell throws down against American Reilly Opelka in what should be one of the more interesting matches at the Geneva Open on Wednesday. O’Connell required 3 sets in his first round victory over tough Albert Ramos Vinolas. O’Connell beat Vinolas 7-6 (7-3), 6-4. Opelka got the bye.

So we don’t know how well he will play in this match. In his previous tournament, the Internazionali BND d’Italia, Opelka lost in the first round to Stan Wawrinka. Wawrinka remains one of the better men’s tennis players on the ATP. So Opelka should perform much better against O’Connell. Reilly scores the victory.

Tennis Betting Pick: Reilly Opelka

Denis Shapovalov vs. Ilya Ivashka

Canadian Shapovalov is 16-9 this ATP season. He had a fantastic Internazionali BND d’Italia, upsetting Rafael Nadal 1-6, 7-5, 6-2 in the third round before falling to Casper Ruud, one of the favorites to win the Geneva Open, in the quarterfinals.

When NitroBetting posts odds, Shapovalov should be a huge chalk. Shapovalov should handle Ilya Ivashka. So if you want to back the favorite, make sure to look for a decent prop before accepting the low odds.

Tennis Betting Pick: Denis Shapovalov

WTA – 2022 Internationaux de Strasbourg

Aliaksandra Sasnovich vs. Angelique Kerber

NitroBetting has posted odds for this match. It should be a good one. Aliaksandra Sasnovich beat Julie Gervais in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2, in her first Internationaux de Strasbourg match. Angelique Kerber beat Diane Parry 6-3, 6-4 in her first Internationaux de Strasbourg contest. Kerber is the slight chalk. But Angelique is just 2-8 in singles matches this season. Sasnovich is the play.

Tennis Betting Pick: Aliaksandra Sasnovich -115

Oceane Dodin vs. Ekaterina Makarova

25-year-old French player Oceane Dodin fought hard to get by Ana Konjuh in the first round. Dodin won the first set 6-2. Konjuh dominated the second set 6-1 and then Dodin rallied in the third set to beat Konjuh 7-5.

In her first round match, Ekaterina Makarova lost the first set versus Sorana Cirstea 1-6. Makarova came back to beat her rival in the next two sets, 6-3, 6-2. Makarova should take the momentum she gained in the second and third sets to get past Dodin.

Tennis Betting Pick: Ekaterina Makarova

Karolina Pliskova vs. Bernarda Pera

Veteran Czech player Karolina Pliskova isn’t in great form. Pliskova, often a major tournament contender, is just 2-6 in 8 matches this season. But Karolina beat Marta Kostyuk 6-4, 6-2 in her first match at the Internationaux de Strasbourg. Pliskova should be back on track. Expect another straight sets win.

Tennis Betting Pick: Karolina Pliskova
