Roberto Caballes Baena vs. Denis Yevseyev
31-year-old Denis Yevseyev had to qualify for this week’s ATP tournament. Yevseyev played great when beating Ludvig Hede 2-6, 6-1, 6-1. Then in the qualifying final, Yevseyev dusted Manuel Guinard 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.
But the reason to truly consider Yevseyev a contender versus the more popular Roberto Caballe Baena is because the projected underdog upset Alexandre Muller 7-5, 7-5 in his first round match. Beating Muller impresses.
Baena, though, upset 6-seed Roman Safiullin in his first Nordea Open match. It took Baena, who is 16-16 in singles matches this season, 3 sets a tiebreaker to get the win. Safiullin may have pushed Baena just enough for us to back Yevseyev on the spread line.
