Texas vs. TCU NCAAB Odds and Preview – March 1st, 2023

By Hank Blaine

No. 9 Texas still has a shot to share the Big 12 regular-season title, but that would disappear Wednesday if the Longhorns lose at No. 22 TCU in a national TV matchup as they try for the season sweep.

Texas goes for the season sweep as it beat visiting TCU 79-75 on Jan. 11. Marcus Carr made the go-ahead 3-pointer with a minute to play, and Sir’Jabari Rice hit three free throws over the final six seconds. After Carr’s 3-pointer gave Texas the lead, TCU’s Emanuel Miller had a chance to tie it with a three-point play but missed the free throw. Rice got a rebound off a Longhorns miss at the other end and made two free throws to stretch the Texas lead.

The Longhorns trailed by as much as 18 points (40-22) with 2:57 left in the first half and overcame a 12-point deficit (61-49) with 9:36 remaining in the contest. Miller scored 21 points on 10-of-12 shooting to lead TCU. Timmy Allen led UT with 17 points. Allen converted 8-of-13 field goals and added five rebounds, two assists, two steals and one block.

The Longhorns hold a 116-69 lead in the all-time series vs. TCU that dates back to a 53-27 Texas victory in Austin on Jan. 30, 1915. Texas has won eight of the last nine and 25 of the last 33 meetings. UT has earned victories in each of its last three trips to Fort Worth.

Why Bet on the Texas Longhorns?

Texas (22-7, 11-5 Big 12) is second in the Big 12 behind Kansas. UT comes off an 81-72 loss at No. 9 Baylor on Saturday, even though the Bears lost star freshman Keyonte George to injury in the first half. UT was up 18-4 with 11:32 left in the first half. Baylor then scored 25 of the next 30 points, including 18 in a row, to turn the tide.

Dylan Disu had a season-high 24 points in the loss. Disu, who entered the game with a season high of 14 points, posted his Texas scoring high and was just five points shy of his collegiate career high of 29 against Kentucky on Feb. 17, 2021 when he played for Vanderbilt. Disu converted 10-of-15 field goals, including 3-of-4 from three-point range.

UT is 15-6 under the leadership of Interim coach Rodney Terry this season. The 22-7 record marks UT’s best 29-game start since the 2010-11 season (24-5). The 11-5 conference record marks UT’s best 16-game league start since the 2010-11 season (finished at 13-3). Thirteen of the 22 victories have been by at least 10 points, and the Longhorns have posted a +10.4 scoring margin this year (79.2-68.8).

In Big 12 play, Texas leads the conference in team free throw shooting percentage at 78.1-percent (253-324). The Longhorns have allowed 332 assists while forcing 469 turnovers (16.2 tpg) this year. UT has forced at least 15 turnovers in 21 of its first 29 contests. Texas has recorded a 538-326 advantage in points off turnovers this season.

Why Bet on the TCU Horned Frogs?

TCU (19-10, 8-8) was an 83-82 winner at Texas Tech on Saturday. JaKobe Coles made two free throws with 4.3 seconds remaining, and the Horned Frogs held on despite blowing a 12-point lead in the final eight minutes. Mike Miles Jr. led all scorers with 24 points, including a 2-of-4 effort from 3-point range. Miles’ 24 points increased his career total to 1,192, which ties him with Dennis Nutt for 20th in program history. It was Miles’ seventh game of 20 or more points this season and the 19th of his career.

Emanuel Miller finished with this second double-double of the season with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Miller leads the Big 12 in shooting at 54.9 percent. He’s shooting a team-best 18-of-41 (43.9%) from 3-point range. Starting center Eddie Lampkin was out injured and is questionable for this one.

TCU is attempting to finish over .500 in conference play for the first time since 2001 (9-7, WAC). It is attempting to play in the NCAA Tournament in consecutive seasons for the first time since 1953. A win would give TCU 20 wins for the fifth time in the last seven seasons.

TCU leads the Big 12 in shooting percentage in conference games only (47.6). It ranks 20th nationally in adjusted defensive efficiency (95.0), and second in the Big 12 and 33rd nationally with 4.7 blocked shots per game. Under Jamie Dixon in Schollmaier Arena, TCU is 89-33 overall and 33-28 in Big 12 games. TCU is 37-9 as a ranked team at home and 20-7 as a ranked team at home under Dixon.
