We could see a lot more home runs hit in Toronto this MLB season as there were $300 million in renovations done to the Blue Jays’ Rogers Centre this offseason and most of the fences were moved in. The Jays play the second game of their home series vs. the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday.

Why bet on the Detroit Tigers?

Detroit looks like it again will be a disappointment and manager AJ Hinch is on the hot seat. His team went 66-96 last season and they seem to be well on their way to another abysmal campaign. His offense has the third-worst batting average in baseball (.205) and is dead-last with an OPS of .553. The Tigers seemingly have no patience at the plate.

“We’re not a good first-pitch strike pitching staff right now and we’re not missing a ton of bats,” Hinch said. “We’re not getting into leverage counts. If you do that against teams that can roll their lineup to some pretty good hitters, you are going to find yourself behind.”

It’s lefty Eduardo Rodriguez (0-2, 6.30 ERA) on the mound Wednesday. Rodriguez (0-2) took the loss last Wednesday, allowing four runs on six hits and two walks over 4.2 innings against the Astros. He struck out one. Rodriguez allowed six hits but two of those were homers, including a two-run shot by Chas McCormick in the second inning. He has received only one run from his offense over his first two starts.

This will be the last-ever series in Toronto for Tigers legend and future Hall of Famer Miguel Cabrera, who is retiring after this year. He has 1,133rd career extra-base hits, one hit away from tying Tris Speaker for 16th on the MLB all-time list. Detroit is without starting outfielder Austin Meadows. He was placed on the 10-day injured list over the weekend due to anxiety. Akil Baddoo will start most games in his spot and has been leading off.

Detroit went 2-5 against the Blue Jays last season, including dropping three-of-four games in Toronto.

Why bet on the Toronto Blue Jays?

The renovations were for Rogers Centre to be more fan-friendly but also should make it more hitter friendly. Right field now is 359 feet from home plate (previously 375) and the right-center power alley is 372 feet (previously 383). The right-field wall now is 14 feet and 4 inches high, while the right-center wall is 10 feet and 9 inches. The park’s walls previously were a uniform 10 feet. Left field is now 368 feet (from 375) and left-center at 371 feet (from 383). The center-field wall remains 400 feet away, but the height is now 8 feet, bringing home-run-robbing catches into play.

“The new dimensions, moving the walls in, it’s going to let [Vladimir Guerrero Jr.] and all these big guys hit that many more homers. On the defensive side, it will help us a lot more than it will hurt us, because we have very good outfielders out there,” said new Jays outfielder Kevin Kiermaier.

Reliever Adam Cimber is well aware that pitchers aren’t in line to benefit from the changes. Cimber is lumping in the ballpark remodel with MLB rules changes like the pitch clock, restrictions on defensive shifts, bigger bases and a limit on pickoff moves.

“They’re trending in an offensive direction around the league, so that’s only going to multiply, I guess, when you get to a stadium that moved the fences in,” Cimber said. “But I think you just have to accept that and do your best. … There’s not much you can do other than adapt and adjust.”

Right-hander Kevin Gausman (1-1, 0.00 ERA) is scheduled to start Wednesday. Gausman allowed four hits and two walks while striking out seven across six shutout innings to earn the win last Thursday against the Royals. Gausman allowed only one hit through six innings and was ultimately pulled after allowing the first two batters of the seventh inning to reach base. Gausman has not surrendered an earned run across his first two outings — spanning 12 innings — while also maintaining an impressive 14:3 K:BB in that span. Gausman had to tweak his delivery in the offseason to avoid getting called for balks with the new rules.
