UFC 316 Main Card Preview

Vicente Luque vs. Kevin Holland

Favorite Kevin Holland had been losing, dropping 3-of-4 with the lone victory coming in a submission at UFC 302. But in his last, Holland stepped it up, taking down Gunnar Nelson via unanimous decision.

Beating Luque may not be easy, though. Luque is 2-1 straight up in his last 3. The odds suggest Holland wins this somewhat easily, but Luque could get lucky. Also, the odds make the dog an overlay.

UFC 316 Pick: Vicente Luque

Mario Bautista vs. Patchy Mix

Bautista is on fire. He’s won 5 straight in his current form cycle. In his last, Mario beat legend Jose Aldo via split decision. Before beating Aldo, Bautista scored a unanimous decision and submission wins.

Patchy Mix is 20-1 straight up and comes from Bellator. Although Bellator isn’t on the same level as UFC, it’s the closest promotion that’s. Also, Mix is a ridiculous 13-0 via submission. If those go to the ground, Mix gets it done.

UFC 316 Pick: Patchy Mix

Kelvin Gastelum vs. Joe Pyfer

Underdog Kevin Gastelum is in decent form, going 2-1 in his last 3. Both wins were via unanimous decision, which tells us Gastelum’s tank hasn’t run out of fuel in the third round.

Joe Pyfer has won 4-of-5. What’s fantastic about the streak is that Pyfer won 3 via KO/TKO and one via submission. The fave can do it all. So, although Gastelum has a shot, the odds make the dog an underlay even if he’s +245. At -350, Pyfer’s a good pick, and that says a lot about his chances of winning this.

UFC 316 Pick: Joe Pyfer

Julianna Pena vs. Kayla Harrison // UFC Women’s Bantamweight Championship

It’s not often that the champion in a UFC title fight is the underdog. In this case, Pena isn’t just a dog; she’s a big-time dog. The UFC odds spread is massive, with Harrison the top favorite on the board at -650.

The 18-1 Harrison is 6-0 via TKO/KO and 7-0 via submission. If Pena doesn’t take a chance, Harrison will eventually get to her. If she does, Harrison gets the upper hand because she’s the superior mixed martial artist. Look for a prop, either a round prop or knockout prop, and throw Harrison into any parlays, even mixed sports parlays.

UFC 316 Pick: Kayla Harrison

Merab Dvalishvili vs. Sean O’Malley // UFC Bantamweight Championship

O’Malley has physical advantages, length, and height, which should allow him to exact revenge. But he’s up against a mixed martial artist with an extremely high IQ. Dvalishvili’s MMA IQ is off the charts. He has a knack for understanding his opponent’s strategy, dissecting it, and then pouncing on his opponent.

Additionally, Merab frustrates his opponents, which is likely to happen in this bout. O’Malley will struggle to cut off the Octagon, which means Dvalishvili can dart in, get his points, and then move back out. If O’Malley moves forward too fast and without a plan, Merab’s footwork will put O’Malley at a disadvantage. The champ prevails.

UFC 316 Pick: Merab Dvalishvili
