Unranked 2023 March Madness Betting Darlings

By Hank Blaine

Every year, teams flying under the radar end up surprising in the NCAA March Madness Tournament. Catching surprise teams early is the best way to score both against the spread, and money line profit. With that in mind, keeping the six teams listed below on your radar could be wise. All six received votes from the Associated Press in the AP’s final regular season rankings. None of the six made the cut, which means hoops handicappers could score decent profit betting on the following six to cover spreads.

Providence Friars

The Friars were ice cold towards the end of the regular season. Providence finished going 1-3 straight up and against the spread. The lone victory came against 7-24 Georgetown, the worst team in the Big East this season.

So there’s a reason Providence ended the regular season unranked. Ah, but a quick look at the earlier record and it’s obvious this is a good basketball team. The Friars beat UConn, Marquette, and Creighton at home, and lost to Xavier by 2 on the road.

Iowa State Cyclones

Iowa State went an awful 2-6 straight up in their final 8. In those same 8 games, the Cyclones only covered twice, in the 2 games they won SU.

However, Iowa State ended the regular season on a super high note. The Cyclones marched into Waco and beat the Baylor Bears on the road 73-58 as a 7-point underdog. Iowa State will make the NCAA Tournament. The Cyclones, for sure, are a team to watch.

Northwestern Wildcats

It’s tough to trust any Big Ten team in the NCAA Tournament. But if you’re going to, why not trust the team that beat Purdue, Indiana, and Iowa back-to-back-to-back?

Sure, the Wildcats imploded after the stunning run, losing 3 straight to Illinois, Maryland, and Penn State. But Northwestern ended the regular season beating Rutgers on the road. The Wildcats can surprise.

Oral Roberts Golden Eagles

Oral Roberts went 27-4 this season. But because they play in the lesser known Summit League, the AP never took them seriously.

The hope is that Oral Roberts gets an advantageous seed. The thing about the Golden Eagles is that they can beat you with defense, they allow 70 per game, or offense, Oral Roberts averages 84 per games.

Yes, you read that right. The Golden Eagles average 14 more points per game than they’re opponents. If Oral Roberts plays the same way in the Big Dance as they did during the regular season, they for sure will be wearing Cinderella’s slipper.

Florida Atlantic Owls

The Owls could be this season’s St. Peters. They’re good enough. They’ve also done great things both straight up and against the spread.

FAU went 28-3 straight up. The spread line record was a terrific 19-9-1. Like Oral Roberts, the points differential is outstanding. FAU gives up 65 per game and scores 79 each contest.

Utah State Aggies

The Aggies ended the regular season on fire. Utah State went 5-0 SU and ATS. The Aggies finished a game behind San Diego State in the underrated Mountain West Conference. Not only that, but the Aggies went 19-11 ATS. So Utah State showed they can cover spreads.
