Jokic ready to lift another NBA Most Valuable Player Award
Per the odds, it’s all over but the shouting. Jokic is the -900 favorite to beat Luka, Shai, Jayson, and Giannis and win his third NBA Most Valuable Player Award. A win would also be Nikola’s third victory in the past 4 seasons.
Is a Jokic a lock? He could be. Nikola averaged 26.4 points, 12.4 rebounds, and 9 assists per game this season. Ah, but the fact the Nuggets didn’t secure the top seed in the Western Conference playoffs could sway voters to go a different direction.
Luka second choice… but by a wide margin
Most believe that if voters don’t back Jokic, they will back Luka Doncic. The Dallas Mavericks star averaged 34 points, almost 10 assists, and almost 10 rebounds per game. Doncic was incredible this season when leading the Mavericks to a comfortable fifth seed playoff position.
For sure, Luka is one of the league’s best players. Not only that, but he offers a decent number, +550, to beat fellow Western Conference star Nikola Jokic. For sure, Doncic will be in the running and since the Nuggets aren’t the top seed, Luka might score the MVP win.
Dark horse Shai Gilgeous-Alexander offers overlay odds, but isn’t worth backing
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is the dark horse play. Gilgeous-Alexander plays for the top playoff seed in the Western Conference, the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Up until this season, Shai was a sort of journeyman player. But once he landed in Oklahoma City, he took off. Without a doubt, the reason for OKC’s turnaround rests on Gilgeous-Alexander’s shoulders.
Shai averaged over 30 points, close to 6 boards, and close to 6 assists per game. Those stats pale in comparison to Doncic’s and Jokic’s. But Alexander leads the top seed in the West. Taking a shot on Gilgeous-Alexander makes sense.
Tatum and Giannis are +10000 underdogs to take the NBA MVP
Both Jayson Tatum and Giannis Antetokounmpo are on the outside looking in. Both are deserving of the NBA MVP.
Tatum scores 27 each game with 8 boards and 5 assists each time he steps onto the court. Giannis averages over 30, 11.5 rebounds, and close to 7 assists each contest.
But although both are deserving, leapfrogging Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Luka Doncic, and Nikola Jokic doesn’t seem possible. If you want to take a shot, back Tatum over Antetokounmpo since Jayson plays for the NBA’s best regular season team, the Boston Celtics. But don’t expect to win your bet.
