Why Bet on the Golden State Warriors?
Golden State followed up a 123-107 home win in Game 1 with an equally easy 126-106 home win in Game 2 on Monday – maybe the two days off and a return home are just what the Nuggets need, although they look outmatched.
In his return from injury, two-time MVP Steph Curry has come off the bench in the first two games. He was amazing in Game 2, shooting 12-for-17 overall and 5-for-7 from dep for 34 in just 23 minutes. Curry was the only player in NBA history to score at least 30 points while playing in 23 minutes or less. Curry scored five points in the first quarter before erupting for 21 over the second and third frames. He was a big contributor in Golden State’s explosive 44-point third quarter that put the game on ice.
It was Curry’s second career 30-point game off the bench in the postseason. Curry’s 71 percent shooting was the highest field-goal percentage of his playoff career. It was the first time in his career he scored 30+ points in fewer than 25 minutes (regular season or playoffs) even though it was the 48th time he played 25 minutes or less.
Jordan Poole has been starting in Curry’s spot and been so good that he likely will continue to do so. Poole had 30 points in Game 1 and followed with 29 points, eight assists, five rebounds, two steals and a block in Game 2. Through the first two playoff games of his career, he’s posted 59 points and 11 assists while shooting 19-for-29 from the field, including a scoring 11-for-17 from 3.
“Anything that is going to help the team, he’s all for,” Coach Steve Kerr said of Curry coming off the bench. “We always collaborate. We talk about everything. It’s just very matter of fact with Steph. There’s never any ego that gets in the way.”
There are now three potential sharpshooters on the court for the Warriors with Poole, Klay Thompson and Curry, and given the attention that Curry draws whether he’s shooting well or not, only one of them has to be really hot for the Warriors to be in good shape.
Why Bet on the Denver Nuggets?
Denver has had Nikola Jokic and not much else in this series. Jokic finished with 26 points, 11 rebounds, four assists, two blocks and a steal across 28 minutes in Game 2 before being ejected. Jokic was harassed all night by Draymond Green, and the two got tangled up under the basket on a shot attempt midway through the fourth quarter. Jokic argued with the refs that no foul was called and was ejected with a second technical foul.
“I’m not supposed to do that, and I’m not going to do that. I think I got fouled in the moment because I heard the slap,” Jokic said. “That’s why I just reacted.”
Jokic has struggled to carry a roster that’s still without two of its three best players (Jamal Murray is out after suffering a torn ACL a year ago, and Michael Porter Jr. is not healthy enough to return from mid-season back surgery) against a small-ball Warriors lineup that has given Jokic fits. Aaron Gordon and Jeff Green gave Denver essentially nothing in Game 2, scoring seven and three points, respectively.
Porter Jr. is not ruling out a return in this series but he hasn’t played since early November so there’s probably not much he could offer at this point. Porter is not expected to play in Game 3.
