Why the NFL is Better than the NBA
In the battle between the four major North-American sporting leagues, the NFL reigns supreme over the competition, even with the massive popularity of the NBA slowly taking over the whole globe. As such, let’s try to put an end to the debate and figure out what exactly makes the NFL such a bigger draw to American sports fans than the NBA?
Nitrobetting is ready to equip its bettors with the latest news, futures odds, and special features for the duration of the 2022 NFL offseason. This time, let’s take a breather from all the latest NFL news and make three compelling reasons why the NFL is actually better than the NBA.
3 Reasons Why the NFL is Better than the NBA
The King of Live Television
Simply put, there’s no bigger program on US television than the NFL. Based on recent findings, the NFL accounted for 75 of the top 100 most-watched TV broadcasts in 2021. Meanwhile, neither the NBA, MLB, nor NHL had a single sporting event crack the top 100. The NFL also amasses nearly $5 billion more in annual revenue compared to the NBA.
On the other hand, it’s worth noting that the NBA has a much bigger following on a global scale, with their merchandise sales and broadcasting rights overseas giving the league more accessible to countries who don’t otherwise follow American football. Regardless, when it comes to just matters stateside, the NFL is the one true leader in all sports.
Team Play on the Gridiron vs. Superstars on the Hardcourt
Considering that the NFL has a 53-man roster and the NBA has around 12-15 players max on the roster at a given time, it only stands to reason that the former exemplifies a more team-oriented sport compared to the latter. Superior defensive-minded teams have won countless Super Bowls over the years, whereas finding a defense-first NBA team to have won a league title is few and far in between.
Having stars dedicated separately to both offense and defense (and even sometimes special teams) also means that there are more lucrative opportunities in terms of jersey sales in the NFL compared to the NBA, which relies heavily on its biggest stars on their respective teams to be the driving sales force.
Shorter Schedule, More Drama
Sometimes, shorter is sweeter, and that’s certainly the case between the NFL and NBA seasons. 32 teams play a total of 17 games apiece in the regular season for a total of just 544 games, with each team playing only once a week. Compare that to the NBA’s more grueling schedule of 1,230 games spread across 30 teams, and the fatigue of a longer basketball season does slowly sink in, especially when the league’s playoff picture is already set with days or sometimes weeks left in the campaign.
Meanwhile, the razor-thin margins of a 17-game season in the NFL mean that teams are in win-now mode each and every week. Not only that, but the NFL postseason has a win-or-go-home format that provides even more thrills with everything on the line in any given playoff game. The NBA, on the other hand, can only hope for a playoff series to go the full seven-game distance to come close to replicating the same drama that the NFL postseason consistently offers on a game-by-game basis.
