Why Rafael Nadal Will Win 2022 Wimbledon

By Carlos Chacon

Rafael Nadal recently announced his plans to compete at Wimbledon this year. This marks the Spaniard’s return to the tournament since his last appearance in 2019. He already secured the first two Grand Slam events of the season, but there were second thoughts on whether he could work through the foot problems he faced this year. Nadal reiterated that he needs to listen to his body, which could mean skipping the event if things take a turn for the worse. But, this remains a positive undertaking for the Australian Open and French Open champion.

Like Novak Djokovic, Nadal remains one of the finest grass-court players in the sport. He secured two titles and three final appearances at the All England Lawn Tennis Club. And at his best, the 36-year-old can work his way to a third Wimbledon victory.

Nitrobetting looks at three reasons that give Rafael Nadal the edge in the upcoming 2022 Wimbledon.

An astonishing season for Rafael Nadal

There’s no denying that Nadal hasn’t lost his touch despite dominating the sport for quite some time. He recently produced another impressive chapter to add to his portfolio at Roland Garros, where he sealed another Grand Slam title. The victory increases his historic men’s singles record to an astonishing 22 majors.

His form this year speaks for itself. After his Australian Open and French Open victory, the Manacor-native could continue his run to a 2022 Grand Slam when Wimbledon starts towards the end of June.

Injuries played a role in Nadal’s 2021 run. His impressive Roland-Garros final win over Casper Ruud backed by his epic comeback victory over Daniil Medvedev in the Melbourne decider cements his name as one of the greats. At his age, many think that his foot problem might keep him out of the winner’s picture by 2022, but his previous results say otherwise.

Determination running through his veins

Nadal reiterated that Wimbledon has always been a top priority following his superior performance at the French Open. While fans are worried if he can overcome his injuries, the man with the most major titles in history said he was confident ahead of The Championships and has been training with Spanish tennis star Martin Landaluce.

Grass courts are not exactly a surface closely associated with his success. Nevertheless, the two-time champion made his way to the final on seven of his 14 appearances in England. Furthermore, his history with Novak Djokovic gives more life to the event. The latter will start as a favorite to win, but Nadal knows that his first title at the tournament in 12 years will inch him closer to a calendar Grand Slam–an achievement no player in men’s singles has done since Rod Laver in 1969.

Should Nadal push through, we expect to see him return to action on Monday, June 27, or the day after that, when the first-round matches begin.

A thinned-out competition

The men’s field at Wimbledon pushes through without Russian and Belarusian players because of the war in Ukraine. With that, No. 1 ranked Daniil Medvedev and No. 8 Andrey Rublev, both Russian nationalities, will not play. In addition, No. 2 ranked player Alexander Zverev of Germany nurses a torn ligament from the French Open semifinal and could be out of action for months.

Novak Djokovic is likely to be the biggest hurdle in the way of Nadal. The world’s best grass-court player showing up in Wimbledon, where he won the last three men’s singles, is a tough act to follow. Nadal will enter as the No. 2 seed, but his hunt for a Grand Slam is expected to be less demanding without the aforementioned frontrunners.

Rafael Nadal odds to win the 2022 Wimbledon men’s singles

At +650, Rafael Nadal has the second-best odds to win 2022 Wimbledon. Following speculation of his 14th French Open title concerning his availability for the next Grand Slam, Wimbledon, it looks like the Spaniard is on track to fight for the men’s championship title. His imposing form recently gives him a shot at scoring his third Wimbledon title since 2010.
