Sascha’s Setback Slams Wimby Dream Shut
Alexander Zverev was well on his way towards a Grand Slam title by reaching the semifinal of the 2022 French Open earlier this month. Unfortunately, the 25-year-old Hamburg native was forced to retire from his match against Rafael Nadal after Zverev tore three ligaments in his right ankle.
Zverev was in a heated battle against Nadal prior to that injury, with the scorecard at 6-7, 6-6 in the second set. That semifinal appearance in June was his best run at the French Open, having also made the semis of the tournament last year. Zverev hasn’t advanced past the fourth round in six-career trips to Wimbledon.
Timetable for Zverev’s Return
On the bright side, Zverev had recently confirmed that he had a successful surgery on his ankle and is well on his path to recovery. On the other hand, there appears to be no definite timetable yet for return of the second-best male tennis player in the world just yet, which stands to reason given the severity of Zverev’s injury that has put countless athletes on the shelf for weeks or even months.
It’s definitely an interesting time for the ATP Tour, with the top-two ranked men’s singles players both not participating at Wimbledon, which will begin on June 27. World No. 1 and Moscow native Daniil Medvedev was banned from participating in this year’s tournament due to Russia’s ongoing conflict with Ukraine, making this year’s draw at Wimby a very compelling event to behold in spite of Zverev and Medvedev’s respective absences.
