External Factors Force Medvedev Out of Wimby Draw

Due to circumstances beyond his control, Daniil Medvedev has been banned from participating in the 2022 Wimbledon men’s singles tournament, as the Russian sensation was not allowed to compete due to his native country’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine. The ATP Tour’s decision to ban players from Russia and Belarus in this year’s edition of Wimby also forced the organization to not award season points in the 2022 Wimbledon tournaments because of the imbalance that the bannings have caused.

Medvedev’s absence marks the second time this year that a high-profile men’s singles tennis player had been forced out of a Grand Slam tournament for non-injury reasons. Earlier in January, Novak Djokovic was handed a three-year ban at the Australian Open due to Djokovic’s unvaccinated status causing a major health concern in the eyes of the Australian government.

Was Daniil’s Denial Deserved?

2022 hasn’t been very kind to some of the best tennis players in the world, with Medvedev being the latest victim without being directly involved in Russia’s political conflicts. However, the 26-year-old Moscow native isn’t helping himself by becoming one of the more reviled tennis players of late.

At the recently-concluded Halle Open men’s single final in France, Medvedev had a meltdown during his match against eventual tournament champion, Hubert Hurkacz. Falling into an early 0-5 hole to Hurkacz in the first set, Medvedev got into a shouting match with French coach Gilles Cervara, with Cervara walking out of the venue and leaving his pupil to defeat his opponent on his own and failing to do so. Medvedev would go on to apologize for his actions, but has certainly drawn the ire of many tennis fans and pundits in the process.
