Ohio State Buckeyes 2023 NCAAF Season Betting Guide

By Hank Blaine

This season, most college football experts believe the Ohio State Buckeyes continue their College Football Playoff march. Ohio State made the CFP last season, falling to Georgia in one of the semifinals after building what appeared to be an insurmountable lead. C.J. Stroud, the quarterback for the Buckeyes in 2022, is now a Houston Texan. Even though Stroud is in the NFL, will the Buckeyes do enough to make it to another College Football Playoff? Check out our Ohio State Buckeyes 2023 NCAAF Season Betting Guide where we predict the Buckeyes’ money line, against the spread, and over under total records.

Ohio State Buckeyes 2023 Straight-Up Overview

The Ohio State Buckeyes had massive success last season because they had one of the best quarterbacks in college football under center. Stroud almost pulled off a massive upset of the Georgia Bulldogs in the CFP.

Stroud had such a great college career that although he didn’t win the Heisman, he was the second pick in the NFL Draft after Bryce Young went to the Carolina Panthers with the first pick.

Replacing Stroud won’t be easy. Ohio State fans had high hopes one of the two competing signal-callers, Kyle McCord or Devin Brown, would pull away during the spring and summer. McCord or Brown didn’t separate, which is why head coach Ron Day is going to use both in Ohio State’s first game of the season against Indiana.

Using two quarterbacks is a bad idea. It won’t work against squads like Notre Dame and Michigan. So the fact Day has yet to decide on a starting quarterback is an issue that Ohio State didn’t have last season.

Another problem is with Ohio State’s defense. The Buckeyes weren’t horrible in 2022. But Ohio State allowed 120 rushing yards per game. Rival Michigan rumbled for over 200 yards. Donovan Edwards had 216 rushing yards and scored a couple of rushing touchdowns.

If the Buckeyes don’t improve the rush defense, Ohio State could lose 3 to 4 regular season games. The matchup against Notre Dame happens in South Bend. The Irish will field an excellent offensive line.

Wisconsin is a road game. Luke Fickell will make sure the Badgers’ rushing attack is ready. Penn State is going to be very good. So although the Buckeyes get the Nittany Lions at home, Penn State could pull off the upset.

The game against Michigan happens in Ann Arbor. Ohio State shouldn’t win that game. After a deep dive, Ohio State could underperform. We’re going to give the Buckeyes a victory over Wisconsin, Notre Dame, or Penn State. But Ohio State loses 3 this season.

Ohio State Buckeyes 2023 Against the Spread Overview

Oddsmakers will set normal Ohio State betting lines, meaning the Buckeyes will be an underlay to cover, until the straight-up loss to Notre Dame on Sep. 23. After Ohio State loses to Notre Dame, oddsmakers will adjust.

We should expect a 6-6, 5-7, or 7-5 Ohio State ATS record. The guess here is that the Buckeyes go 5-7 because they don’t cover against Penn State in a home game on Oct. 21.

Ohio State Buckeyes 2023 Over/Under Overview

Ohio State’s defense should struggle against Penn State, Wisconsin, Notre Dame, Michigan, and even teams like Western Kentucky.

Oddsmakers project to set O/U totals that give Ohio State’s defense more credit than it should. The under on Ohio State games should be a decent play. OSU goes 5-7 over to under.

Ohio State Buckeyes 2023 Over/Under Record Prediction: 5-7
