Why Bet on the Green Bay Packers?

This is the fourth consecutive season Green Bay has faced the 49ers in a prime-time game and the third consecutive year on the road. Since the AFL/NFL merger 1970, it is the first time the Packers have played at the 49ers in the regular season in three straight years.

Last season in Week 9, the Packers rolled at the Niners 34-17 as Aaron Rodgers threw for 305 yards and four scores. He grew up not far from San Francisco and of course starred in college at Cal in the Bay area. There was some speculation that Rodgers wanted to be traded to the 49ers this offseason. San Francisco’s QB that day was the forgettable Nick Mullens because Jimmy Garoppolo was injured. Jimmy G is healthy now and Mullens is long gone.

The head coaches of these teams are friends. Green Bay’s Matt LaFleur and San Francisco’s Kyle Shanahan were on the same offensive coaching staffs with the Texans (2008-09), Washington (2010-13) and the Falcons (2015-16), and LaFleur brought the Shanahan-style offense to Green Bay when he was hired as Packers coach in 2019.

Green Bay (1-1) is on a short week after beating the Lions 35-17 on Monday. Rodgers completed 22 of 27 passes (81.5 pct.) for 255 yards and four touchdowns with no interceptions for a 145.6 rating in last week’s win. He enters Week 3 with 416 career touchdown passes and with four more can tie Hall of Famer Dan Marino (420 touchdown passes) for the sixth-most in NFL history.

Rodgers has played the 49ers 11 times, including the postseason, and has registered a passer rating of 90-plus in 10 of those games and a passer rating of 100-plus in five contests.

The NFL’s best receiver, Davante Adams, had eight catches for 121 yards vs. the Lions but didn’t score. That likely will end here as Adams has a touchdown reception in nine consecutive games on Sunday Night Football, the longest such streak in NFL history. Adams has played in four games against the 49ers (including playoffs), averaging nine receptions, 121.5 yards and a TD per game.

Why Bet on the San Francisco 49ers?

San Francisco has started 2-0 for the third time in 10 seasons, and second under Shanahan. In each of their previous 2-0 starts – 2012 and 2019 – the 49ers advanced to the Super Bowl.

The Niners won in Philadelphia 17-11 last Sunday but lost its top three running backs, JaMycal Hasty and rookies Elijah Mitchell and Trey Sermon to injuries. As of this writing, it’s not clear if any of them will play Sunday. It sounds like Mitchell will at a minimum. Hasty will not. The team also lost starter Raheem Mostert to a season-ending knee injury in Week 1, and Jeff Wilson Jr., the team’s leading rusher from 2020, suffered a meniscus tear in the offseason.

Sunday will be the first time the 49ers have had fans in their stadium since throttling the Packers in the NFC title game following the 2019 season.

Each of the last three games between these teams (including postseason) has been decided by at least 17 points. One or both teams have scored 30-plus points in each of the last four games they have played against each other (including postseason).

Green Bay carries an eight-game primetime win streak (7-1 ATS) into this matchup, easily the longest such active streak in the league and longest since Steelers won 13 straight from 2015-18. The Pack are 5-1 SU & ATS on the road in primetime under LaFleur and went 3-0 SU & ATS on Sunday Night Football last season.
