Kenny Pickett 2022 NFL Draft Best Landing Spots

By Carlos Chacon

Pittsburgh Panthers quarterback Kenny Pickett had a senior season to remember, throwing for over 4,300 yards and 42 passing touchdowns to just seven interceptions. His phenomenal final campaign in Pitt places him as one of the more intriguing QB options in a 2022 NFL Draft class that does not have a real sought-after quarterback prospect for a change. As such, where should Pickett end up considering that there are only a handful of teams in dire need of a new signal-caller?

Pittsburgh Steelers

In a perfect scenario, Kenny Pickett seems like a terrific pick as the next Steelers starting quarterback. Not only will Pickett give recently-acquired Mitchell Trubisky competition for the starting job, but the Pitt standout will also be an immediate fan favorite having played on Heinz Field for the entirety of his college football career.

Unfortunately, a couple of other teams may get the jump on the Steelers sitting with the 20th-overall pick of the 2022 NFL Draft this Thursday. Unless the Steelers move up a few spots in the first round for Pickett, the 23-year-old Jersey native might end up in a different city far from his hallowed ground in Pittsburgh.

Carolina Panthers

If the Panthers decide to give up on the Sam Darnold reclamation project, they could very well spend their sixth-overall pick at the draft by nabbing Pickett off the board that early. Pickett will be joining a Carolina squad that only shares the same name as his previous team, but his path towards getting the starting job appears much quicker in Carolina than in Pittsburgh.

On the other hand, The Panthers may also want to consider another prized QB prospect like Malik Willis or Sam Howell before going all-in on the 2021 ACC Player of the Year given their lofty draft position. Carolina also has issues on offensive line, and this year’s draft class stacked with elite O-lineman prospects could sway the team that direction instead.

Seattle Seahawks

Perhaps the NFL team is biggest need of a starting quarterback is Seattle, which has the ninth-overall pick in this year’s draft. The Seahawks pretty much blew their Super Bowl-winning core apart this offseason save for head coach Pete Carroll and are now in a similar position as the Panthers in terms of QB-needy franchises.

Pickett faces the same issues of joining the Seahawks as with his chances of being drafted by Carolina, as there are plenty of other viable options in the first 10 picks of the draft that Seattle may want to hold off on drafting a QB immediately. Nevertheless, being under the guidance of Carroll would be a nice building block for Pickett’s professional career given Carroll’s magic touch in turning Russell Wilson into a perennial MVP contender.
