Top Boxing Betting Picks of the Week – September 1st, 2022

By Hank Blaine

Two of the world’s top heavyweights duke it out on Sunday night in Los Angeles when Andy Ruiz takes on Luis Ortiz. Ruiz and Ortiz have similar styles, which means fight fans should be in for a treat. In addition to Ortiz versus Ruiz on Sunday, Juan Francisco Estrada takes on Argi Cortes for the WBC Junior Bantamweight Title. See below for boxing odds, analysis, and free picks for six fantastic boxing matches happening over the weekend.

Top Boxing Betting Picks of the Week (September 1st, 2022)

Echo Arena, Liverpool, England – DAZN

  • When: Saturday, September 3rd, 2022. 5pm ET.

Liam Smith vs. Hassan Mwakinyo

The New York State Athletic Commission suspended Liam Smith. Good thing this bout happens at Echo Arena in Liverpool on Saturday. Smith, 31-3-1 with 18 knockout wins, should have no trouble versus Hassan Mwakinyo.

The underdog has a great 20-2 record but he’s fought primarily in Tanzania so it’s doubtful he’s had the training Smith has had. Smith doesn’t get a ton of knockouts. But this could set up for Liam to put on a show. Under is the best play.

Boxing Betting Pick: Hassan Mwakinyo Under 7.5 +100

Hermosillo, Mexico – DAZN

  • When: Saturday, September 3rd, 2022. 8pm ET.

Juan Francisco Estrada vs. Argi Cortes Under // WBC Junior Bantamweight Title

27 year old Argi Cortes hasn’t lost since 2015. Since that time, Cortes has dominated most of his opponents. The underdog in this has an excellent 23-2-2 record with 10 knockout victories. On Saturday, Cortes takes on one of the best flyweights in the world, Juan Francisco Estrada.

This is a step down for Juan. So it’s no use looking to back the dog to win. Will Cortes last more than 10.5 rounds? That’s doubtful. Estrada’s last fight was against future hall of fame boxer Roman Gonzales. Juan won that fight. So he should destroy Cortes.

Boxing Betting Pick: Argi Cortes Under 10.5 -125

Crypto.com Arena, Los Angeles, CA – Fox Sports

  • When: Sunday, September 4th, 2022. 9pm ET.

Abner Mares vs. Miguel Flores

At one point in his career, Abner Mares was headlining main cards. Not anymore. Mares, 31-3-1 with 15 knockout wins, takes on 25-4 Miguel Flores at Crypto.com in Los Angeles.

Flores has lost 2 of his last 3. But Mares hasn’t fought since 2018 and when he did, Leo Santa Cruz beat him. This one is up in the air. Flores won his last fight. It happened last June. Also, the 2 fights Flores lost were to Eduardo Ramirez and Santa Cruz. So it’s not like Flores fell to bums. The underdog deserves a look.

Boxing Betting Pick: Miguel Flores +125

Joey Spencer vs. Kevin Salgado Zambrano

Joey Spencer deserves to be the favorite. Spencer has an impressive 15-0 record. Joey has won 10 of the 15 via KO or TKO. Zambrano’s record is almost as impressive as Spencer’s.

The underdog in this bout is 14-0-1. Zambrano has knocked out 9 of his opponents. Spencer should win, but the odds make the chalk an underlay. Zambrano is the play.

Boxing Betting Pick: Kevin Salgado Zambrano +350

Isaac Cruz vs. Eduardo Ramirez

Cruz versus Ramirez should be a great fight. Both guys are terrific at what they do. Ramirez is 27-2-3 with 12 knockout or technical knockout wins. Cruz is 23-2-1 with 16 KO or TKO victories.

Ramirez can win this bout. But Cruz blasted Yuriorkis Gamboa in his last, knocking out that opponent in the fifth round. If you don’t want to lay the -714 look for a round prop or make an under the total play.

Boxing Betting Pick: Isaac Cruz -714

Andy Ruiz Jr. vs. Luis Ortiz

Andy Ruiz gets better and better. After losing the championship belt in the rematch versus Anthony Joshua, Ruiz bounced back with a nice unanimous decision win against Chris Arreola.

But Luis Ortiz is a major step up. Ortiz is 33-2 with 28 knockout or TKO wins. If the odds difference wasn’t as pronounced as it is, Ruiz might be a decent play. He is much younger. But King Kong shouldn’t offer +300. Not even close. Ortiz is the play.

Boxing Betting Pick: Luis Ortiz +300
