All You Need to Know About LIV Golf

By Carlos Chacon

Despite being shrouded by controversies, the LIV Golf series is still set to embark its maiden journey into the competitive world of professional golf on the 11th of June. What is it exactly that makes LIV Golf such an intriguing topic, and what does it mean for us sports bettors in the near future?

Nitrobetting is here to give the best tips from the betting greens and fairways. This time, let’s take a closer look and cite three things that we need to know about LIV Golf and what it means as a direct competitor of sorts to the PGA TOUR.

Three Key Things About LIV Golf

LIV-ing Large in Saudi Arabia

The LIV Golf International Series is a new professional golf league organized and led by CEO and former PGA TOUR standout Greg Norman, with the financial backing of the government of Saudi Arabia. Given the political tensions between the United States and Saudi Arabia, it stands to reason why there are many Americans who are opposed top the league’s inception.

Regardless of one’s opinion, LIV Golf is still going to be a unique golfing experience to behold. The “LIV” stands for the roman numeral 54, which is the number of holes played in each LIV Golf event, as well as the total score for a golfer if each hole was birdied throughout a given tournament. Five of the eight scheduled events for the upcoming 2022 season will be held in the United States, with the three other locations being in London, Bangkok, and Jeddah.

PGA TOUR Stars Aplenty

There’s a maximum field of players set at 48 golfers in any given LIV Golf event without any cuts. What makes things more interesting is that a good number of PGA TOUR stars have already opted out of the PGA TOUR in favor of the more lucrative ventures from the promising future of LIV Golf.

The most prominent golfing legend who decided to join the LIV Golf tour in favor of the PGA TOUR is Phil Mickelson, whose decision to join the Saudi-backed league led to harsh criticism even before his participation in the first tournament in London was officially announced on June 6.

Other big names joining Mickelson are former majors champions Dustin Johnson and Sergio Garcia, Kevin Na, Louis Oosthuizen, Lee Westwood, and Martin Kaymer amongst many others. One huge grab for LIV Golf is America’s reigning amateur champion in James Piot, with the 23-year-old prodigy opting to play in the LIV Golf tour without having any prior experience in the PGA TOUR.

Why PGA TOUR Golfers Are Moving to LIV Golf

While many will cite money as the main driving factor for former PGA TOUR golfers jumping ship, and that’s certainly true in most cases with golfers being offered tens or even millions of dollars to play in the league instead, the majority of golfers have good intentions in mind.

Currently, the PGA TOUR has a stranglehold on where its members are allowed to play: only in actual PGA TOUR-sanctioned events. Unless you’re an amateur or a non-member who receives a rare invite to a PGA TOUR tournament, you’re pretty much committed to the TOUR all season long.

LIV Golf, on the other hand, offers golfers more options as to where and when they want to play. Considering the grueling weekly schedule and the stiff competition that the PGA TOUR brings, a lot of golfers do still want that alternative option to still be highly competitive in a different organization whilst still earning just as much (if not more) than they were on the TOUR.
