Sportsbooks vs. Online Casinos: Which Offers the Best Betting Experience?

By Hank Blaine

An argument among gamblers that has lasted for decades is which is better, sportsbooks or casinos? When we add the word online in front of the word casino, it becomes clear that there is no real answer to the argument. However, it’s important for us as gamblers to understand the difference and why we might feel, depending on which side of the aisle we’re on, sportsbooks or online casinos are better.

Do Sportsbooks or Online Casinos Offer the Better Betting Experience? It Depends

Sportsbooks and online casino gambling are different

If you don’t believe that sportsbook betting provides as good of an experience as online casino wagering or vice versa, it’s likely because you have more experience with one or the other. The important thing to remember before making a decision regarding either, is that the two are vastly different.

Sportsbook betting requires handicapping sporting events and then coming to a conclusion about which team will win straight up or cover a spread line. Online casino players bet more for entertainment value.

For that reason, some believe sports betting is on a higher level than casino gambling. That’s not always true but successful sports bettors don’t care so much about bells and whistles. So the actual experience of betting isn’t as important to sports bettors as it is to casino gamblers.

Few casino players bet in the sportsbook

The two intersect, but intersection usually happens one way. It’s more likely that a sportsbook player decides to wager a few hands of Texas Hold’em than it is a craps player start handicapping football games.

Professional handicappers view what they do as part statistical analysis and part art. Casino players, again, are mostly in it for the entertainment. The differences between the two are such that a full time casino player isn’t likely to start learning how to handicap sports games.

The full time sports handicapper, though, will play blackjack, craps, most table games and may even play slots once in a while.

If you plan on betting on sports and casino, understand expectations

If you decide you want to gamble in the sportsbook and the online casino, the first thing you should do is set expectations. A sports bet on a football team to cover the spread is -110. The profit if the bet wins is usually 90% of the investment.

Casino gambling is long tail, meaning you must grind out wins in the online casino. Don’t expect to hit the rolling jackpot in Pai Gow Poker or via a slot machine on your first try.

The one similar thing between the two is that to be successful at either, gamblers must have excellent bankroll management skills.

Becoming an expert for one and dabbling in the other could be the way to go

If you want to bet in the sportsbook and online casino, a good strategy is to become an expert in one and then dabble in the other. There’s nothing wrong with learning as much as you can about your online casino, figuring out the slot games you like, the table games your successful at playing, and then learning how to handicap sports.

Vice versa is also true. Becoming an expert handicapper and then learning craps, roulette, blackjack strategies, etc., could lead to more profit. So consider becoming an expert in the sportsbook or online casino and then learning the other.
