2021 College Football Week 10 Recap

By Hank Blaine

The College Football Playoff came out with their first rankings of the season last Tuesday. When the CFP Selection Committee meet this Tuesday, they’ll have to make some tough decisions. One of the teams in the top four has already lost. The other played well below expectations. In fact, 3-of-5 teams in the top six played below expectations, including #2 Alabama. Check out what happened in another tough college football week.

Michigan State falls, Bama and Oregon struggle

Michigan State faced a high-scoring Purdue team on the road in Week 10. Things didn’t turn out well. Behind the fantastic Aidan O’Connell to David Bell connection, O’Connell threw for 536 yards and 3 TDs and Bell caught 11 passes for 217 yards and a TD, Purdue rolled to a 40-29 victory.

MSU should fall out of the top ten. A team that could fall out of the top four are the Oregon Ducks, who quacked their way to a less than impressive 26-16 victory over the rival Washington Huskies.

Rival games mean something, but the Ducks can’t just win, they must dominate. 26-16 over a squad that was 4-4 at the time and plays in the lousy Pac-12, like the Ducks, isn’t dominating. Alabama also played to their rival’s talent level. The annual LSU versus Bama game turned out to be a defensive battle with the Crimson Tide besting the Tigers 20-14. LSU entered Tuscaloosa a close to +30 underdog.

So like Oregon, Alabama struggled. We’ll have to wait and see, but we shouldn’t be surprised if both Alabama and Oregon fall out of the top four.

TCU upsets Baylor a week before the Bears tackle the Sooners

Dave Aranda’s Baylor team had been one of the most disciplined in college football. But just when we thought Baylor was ready to show they belong in the top ten, disaster struck. The Bears allowed TCU quarterback Chandler Morris to go wild with 461 passing yards and 2 TDs and Baylor lost just their second game this season, 30-28.

20-year coach Gary Patterson resigned at Texas Christian earlier in the week. The Horned Frogs played with more energy, more focus, and picked off quarterback Gerry Bohanon twice. Baylor can make amends for the loss with a victory over the Oklahoma Sooners on Saturday. The Bears are +6 dogs. Oklahoma hasn’t played a team on the level of Baylor all season long. So a moneyline upset win is definitely within reach.

Ohio State and Cincinnati win… But don’t impress in victory

Once again, the Ohio State Buckeyes and Cincinnati Bearcats won games. Neither did enough to inspire confidence. The Buckeyes beat Nebraska 26-17 in yet another non-cover victory. Ohio State doesn’t have an easy game this Saturday. Aidan O’Connell and David Bell are in town. Purdue is on a roll. The win over Michigan State happened after a victory over Nebraska on the road. Earlier in the season, the Boilers ended Iowa’s CFP dreams in a road win. Cincinnati is playing terrible football. The Bearcats got past Tulsa 28-20, but it was a third straight non-cover. Cincinnati faces the South Florida Bulls on Saturday. Don’t jump on the Bearcats to impress. Cincy is playing bad enough to where South Florida could pull off the upset. TCU beat Baylor and Purdue upset Michigan State in Week 10 In NCAAF Week 11, is it Cincinnati’s turn to fall?

Michigan rolls over Indiana, Wolverines face Penn State on Saturday

The Wolverines covered the spread in an impressive win over the Indiana Hoosiers, but we shouldn’t get ahead of ourselves. The Hoosiers were without Michael Penix Jr. and most of their starting secondary.

The Wolverines are going to have a much tougher time as a +1 underdog versus the Penn State Nittany Lions on Saturday. Penn State picks it up against their top rivals. And the Lions consider Michigan a top rival. Circle Michigan – Penn State because after Tuesday’s CFP Rankings, the Wolverines could be in line for a top four placement with a victory.
