Cincinnati ends their regular season with a blowout win
College Football Playoff voters are going to find it very difficult to keep Cincinnati from the top four. The Bearcats secured another road victory in Week 13 after dominating East Carolina 35-13.
Cincinnati must now play #24 Houston in the AAC Championship. The Cougars beat Uconn 45-17 in their final regular season game. Houston could move up in the rankings, making Cincinnati versus Houston a championship contest between two top 20 CFP ranked squads. A victory by the Bearcats keeps their likely #3 CFP ranking intact.
Jim Harbaugh and Michigan finally beat Ohio State
Since hiring the former Stanford and San Francisco 49ers head coach, Michigan fans have waited with bated breath for Captain Comeback to provide a victory over Ohio State. The Wolverines must wait no more. Playing in front of their fans, the Maize & Blue decimated Ron Day’s Ohio State squad 42-27 to ensure Michigan enters the Big Ten Championship versus Iowa with at least a #4 CFP ranking. A victory over the Hawkeye’s sends Michigan to their first College Football Playoff.
How did the Wolverines dominate the #2 team in the nation? RB1 Hassan Haskins averaged 6.0 yards per carry on his way to 169. Haskins scored 5 rushing touchdowns. Ohio State will play on New Year’s Day. But with a couple of losses, the Buckeyes have no shot of making the College Football Playoff.
Oklahoma State beats Oklahoma will face Baylor in the title game
The Oklahoma State Cowboys kept their College Football Playoff hopes alive with a stunning come from behind 37-33 victory over rival Oklahoma. The #7 Cowboys figure to move up to #6 becuase Notre Dame should settle in at #5. The win also sent the Pokes to the Big 12 Championship where they will get a chance to impress CFP voters for a final time. Oklahoma State’s opponent in the Big 12 title game are the hot Baylor Bears.
Baylor entered the week ranked #8. Baylor could move up to #7, ahead of Ohio State who figures to fall out of the top 6 for sure. If it’s #5 Oklahoma State versus #7 Baylor for the Big 12 title, and Michigan or Alabama loses, it will be very difficult to keep the Pokes from the CFP.
Oregon beats Oregon State in the Civil War
Oregon beat Oregon State in the Civil War, which means the Ducks get a rematch against top Pac-12 squad Utah in the conference’s championship tilt. The Ducks could beat Utah, but even with a victory, Oregon’s CFP hopes, and Utah’s for that matter, are dead. However, the winner will grab a top bid for one of the best New Year’s Day Bowl games. The loser could also play on New Year’s Day. So definitely pay attention to the Pac-12 Championship.
Bama gets past Auburn in the Iron Bowl a date with Georgia in the SEC title match up next
It took Alabama four overtimes, but the Crimson Tide got past their biggest rival, the Auburn Tigers, in the annual Iron Bowl. Bama will face #1 Georgia in the SEC Championship on Saturday. Before dumping on the Dawgs, consider that although Georgia has played much better than Alabama this season, the Crimson Tide played the more difficult schedule. UGA’s top opponent was Arkansas.
Florida, Clemson, Kentucky, Auburn and Tennessee turned out to be at best mediocre squads. Not only that, but Saban dominates past assistants. Kirby Smart, Georgia’s head coach, has always failed versus his former boss. Keep that in mind when handicapping the SEC Championship.
