Because of the added week, technically, NFL Week 8 that just passed is no longer the halfway point. But for many teams, it proved to be a watershed moment. Two Super Bowl contenders lost their most important players, the Arizona Cardinals suffered their first loss of the season, and the Dallas Cowboys proved why so many pick them to win the Lombardi Trophy. Keep reading to learn what happened in NFL Week 8.

Green Bay and Aaron Rodgers hand AZ their first loss of the season
The Green Bay Packer marched into The Valley and deflated Arizona’s undefeated season balloon. Aaron Rodgers played another great game in the Packers’ 24-21 victory. The Packers required an interception on a miscommunication throw from Kyler Murray to A.J. Green to seal the deal. Rasul Douglas’ pick is the only reason the Cards aren’t 8-0.
That doesn’t mean, of course, that Arizona will bounce back in their next game. Zona must play without JJ Watt while Kyler Murray limped to the locker room after the loss. If Murray can’t go, Zona won’t win. It’s that simple. So keep an eye out on Kyler’s status before dumping on the Cards to bounce back in their next game.
Saints upset Brady and the Buccaneers but lost Winston for the season
The New Orleans Saints picked off Tom Brady twice and sacked him 3 times in an improbable 36-27 Saints’ victory over defending champion Tampa Bay. New Orleans paid a big price in the victory, losing quarterback Jameis Winston for the season. But although Winston will no longer play this season, all hope is not lost.
Trevor Siemian played Big Easy football when throwing for just 159 yards and a TD. These New Orleans Saints don’t throw it all over the field. Even Winston was completing just 58% of his passes. The Saints rely on a great rushing attack and excellent defense, which means that if the new starter under center doesn’t make mistakes, the Saints can still make the playoffs.
Titans will have to continue the rest of the season without Derrick Henry
While the Saints can get over losing Winston, the Tennessee Titans will struggle to get over losing Derrick Henry. No team relied on one player as much as the Titans relied on the best running back in football.
Henry suffered a foot injury that will send him to the bench for the rest of the season. So even though Tennessee beat Indianapolis 34-31, Titans Nation is crying in their beers. The Titans must now win games by scoring at least 30 points. The Titans’ defense isn’t very good. So the onus is on Ryan Tannehill, A.J. Brown, and Julio Jones to get victories.
Cowboys sit Dak, win with Cooper Rush at quarterback
Dallas sat Dak Prescott, started Cooper Rush, and still beat and covered the spread versus the Minnesota Vikings. Once word came out that the Cowboys were going to sit Dak, the spread line switched from favoring the Boys to favoring the Vikings. Rush threw for 325 yards and 2 TDs in Dallas’ impressive 20-16 victory. Cooper should get most of the credit, but we’d be wrong not to give a shout out to the Dallas’ defense.
Big D defenders held Kirk Cousins to 184 yards and a single TD pass. Dalvin Cook rushed for just 78 yards on 18 carries. Right now, Dallas, who brought their record to 6-1 SU and 7-0 ATS, is the best team in the NFL.
Jets use an inspired performance by Mike White to upset the Bengals
The Jets started Mike White and the former Western Kentucky quarterback and 2018 Dallas Cowboys’ fifth-round draft pick responded. White threw for an improbable 405 yards when completing 82.2% of his passes, and for 5 TDs in the Jets unbelievable 34-31 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals. It’s easy to say the Bengals bombed because they did. But let’s put this into perspective.
Cincinnati knew they faced a Jets team without starting quarterback Zach Wilson. So on defense, the Bengals played soft believing that White didn’t have the skills to burn them. Once Cincinnati tried to change up the defense it was too late. White had gotten into a rhythm. There is no such thing as a bad NFL player. Some are better than others for sure, but if a player makes an NFL squad, they’re a good football player. White burned the Bengals because the Stripes didn’t respect his football skills.
Mahomes and the Chiefs get past the Giants, but look terrible in the win
Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs beat the New York Giants, but that doesn’t mean KC is close to challenging the Ravens, Bills, Bengals, or even Raiders in the AFC. Mahomes threw for 275 yards, a TD, and a pick. Patrick didn’t dominate. More disturbing is that KC’s four wins have happened against Cleveland in Week 1, the Eagles, the Washington Football Team and the Giants.
The Chiefs’ defense almost blew it and a suspect offsides call negated a Patrick Mahomes pick six throw. So, yeah, the Chiefs are in trouble. In NFL Week 9, Kansas City, again, offers points. The Chiefs welcome Aaron Rodgers and the Packers to Arrowhead a -3 favorite. KC hasn’t covered in a game this season. So don’t jump on the Chiefs.
Also don’t jump on the Packers. Green Bay beat Arizona in a more important game for them in Week 8. There’s a chance they bounce. Do your homework before laying or taking the points in NFL Week 9’s biggest contest.
