Your key horse should be one with the lung capacity to run 1 ½ miles

Speed is great. So are speed ratings, trainer ability, and jockey ability. But the Belmont Stakes is unique in the sense that horses cannot win unless they have the lungs to run 1 ½ miles. By lungs, we mean the Belmont is unique in the sense the horse with the best stamina often wins. It doesn’t matter if the horse is a front runner, closer, or likes to track front runners. Based on this criteria, the following five horses have the best breeding for the Belmont distance.

  1. 1. Nest
  2. 2. Mo Donegal
  3. 3. We the People
  4. 4. Golden Glider
  5. 5. Rich Strike

The longer the distance the better chance a front runner has to wire the field

If a front runner can handle the distance, it looks like We the People can, then that front runner has a really great shot of going gate to wire. Front runners that can handle the race’s distance in route events, a mile or longer, are very difficult to run down if they can relax on the lead. We the People should be very tough on Saturday.

The breeding, Constitution from a Tiznow broodmare, suggests We the People can run even longer than 1 ½ miles on the lead if he must. As long as he’s relaxed, the morning line chalk should be tough.

Rich Strike is training like the best three-year-old in the country/h3>

The Derby winner has actually gotten bigger and it looks like he’s gotten faster since winning the roses. During this time, three-year-olds improve leaps and bounds. Rich Strike’s connections decided to skip the Preakness because they hadn’t planned on running in the Kentucky Derby and they definitely hadn’t planned on winning the roses. The Belmont was Rich Strike’s goal since the year started.

So far, Rich Strike looks like he’s going to blow away the field. However, he qualifies as the fifth horse on our list in terms of lung capacity. So although Rich Strike should make a decent run, he may tire before the wire and he may tire before We the People, Nest, Mo Donegal and Golden Glider.

Keep that in mind if you plan on making Rich Strike your key horse.

If you don’t see a logical longshot, use one of the top choices as your key horse

When there’s just eight horses in a race, and one of the horses, We the People, looks like lone speed, it makes no sense to search for a longshot. If you think We the People wires the field, the Peter Pan winner is your key horse. If you believe Mo Donegal is sitting on a massive race, the Todd Pletcher runner is the horse to use on top and if you like the looks of Rich Strike coming back a month after winning the Derby, he’s your pick.

Don’t overthink it. As long as the horse you like has the lung capacity, forget odds. There are just eight horses in the race. So don’t talk yourself onto keying a longshot unless you really like the horse.
