2022 Big Ten Tournament Favorites

Wisconsin Badgers

Outside an off-night defeat to Rutgers, the No. 10 Wisconsin Badgers have been on quite a tear, winning seven of their last eight games. They’re now 1.5 games ahead of Illinois for the best regular-season record in the Big Ten, with just one game remaining against the conference’s bottom-dweller in Nebraska.

While it seems that Wisconsin’s a lock for the top seed in the conference tourney, there’s still issues regarding their conference-worst three-point shooting efficiency. Then again, the Badgers have converted a cool 54 percent of their two-point field goals in five of their last six outings, with star player Johnny Davis (20.3 PPG) still being quite the force on the courts.

Illinois Fighting Illini

After going on a brief four-game win streak between late January to early February, the No. 20 Illinois Fighting Illini have been on a rollercoaster of sorts, going 3-3 with no back-to-back victories in sight.

Nonetheless, head coach Brad Underwood still has Illinois in good position for the Big Ten tournament. The defending conference champions now have three consecutive seasons with 20 wins or more thanks to Underwood’s guidance and stud center Kofi Cockburn (21.5 PPG, 60.1 FG%) being a one-man wrecking crew in the paint.

Iowa Hawkeyes

After Wisconsin, the next hottest team in the Big Ten is the No. 24 Iowa Hawkeyes, who’ve won four straight games to date and each being double-digit wins at that. Second-year forward Keegan Murray (23.3 PPG, 56.1 FG%) is carrying the torch for Iowa, which will undoubtedly be a tough out in the upcoming conference tourney.

The only knock on the Hawkeyes is their 1-4 record this season against ranked opponents at the time that they played said games. In turn, their regular-season finale against Illinois on Saturday will be telling whether they’re mere pretenders or true contenders for the Big Ten crown.

Ohio State Buckeyes

Losing by a combined 23 points to lowly Nebraska and Maryland is not a good look for the faltering No. 23 Ohio State Buckeyes. Their two-game skid could not have come at a worse time, as just a few days ago, they were still in the running for the best record in the conference.

Ohio State will close out its season with a two-game home stand, hosting the Spartans and Wolverines from Michigan. Junior forward E.J. Liddell (team-high 19.6 points per game) needs more help out of his supporting cast as the Buckeyes look to reclaim their scoring punch from their two prior wins over Indiana and Illinois, in which they scored 80 or more points apiece.
