2022 Hungarian Grand Prix Sleeper Picks

By Carlos Chacon

The Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc rivalry this season has been disheartening at times, with Ferrari looking like they’re stuck in a loop. Leclerc was leading the grid at the French Grand Prix, only to suffer an early crash and take him out of the race. It’s his third DNF of the season, which puts a huge dent in his championship hopes.

As Red Bull and Verstappen top the Drivers and the Constructors’ standings, we go over the top sleeper picks in the approaching Hungarian Grand Prix.

Sergio Perez

  • 2022 Hungarian Grand Prix Odds: +1400

Checo has been a crucial piece in Verstappen’s championship year. He continues to prove his abilities this year–and even as a title contender at one point–as a consistent point scorer. Since the start of the season, we’ve seen the Mexican driver on the podium six times, including a victory in Monaco last May. He’s been competitive in qualifying with 11 appearances in Q3 and is currently third in the driver standings with 163 points.

Perez gave up his chance at another podium finish at last weekend’s French Grand Prix when he was caught sleeping at the wheel during the Virtual Safety Car. Nevertheless, we’ve seen the 32-year-old deliver positive results for Red Bull. With 396 points in the bag and -400 favorites to win the title, it’s no question why Perez remains a competent sleeper candidate this coming weekend.

George Russell

  • 2022 Hungarian Grand Prix Odds: +25500

It’s been great for Russell since moving to Mercedes. Mr. Consistency grabbed his fifth podium finish at Circuit Paul Ricard, behind teammate Lewis Hamilton. The young driver has also been racking points in his rookie campaign with the German manufacturer, recording 143 of his 162 career points in 12 races.

Reliability is his focal point this season. Russell has one DNF and is yet to encounter mechanical issues with his silver W13. It’s also safe to group him with the sleeper picks of the race considering his strength in qualifying and consistent P5-or-better finishes. As Mercedes introduces new upgrades at Hungaroring, we expect a more combative George Russell coming out of the paddock.

Fernando Alonso

  • 2022 Hungarian Grand Prix Odds: +25000

Never write off Fernando Alonso. At this age, most drivers would start to wear off and struggle to keep up with the younger and fitter talents. However, the two-time World Champion keeps on producing resilient performances one race after another. The Alpine driver finished P6 at the French Grand Prix and remains a quality sleeper pick at +25,000.

In 12 race starts, Alonso secured ten Q3 appearances and one front row start. He currently holds 37 points and produced a solid drive that brought Alpine to fourth in the Constructors’ Standings, ahead of rivals McLaren.
