The Kentucky Jockey Club has been a fixture of the horse racing scene since 1920 and is one of several “Road to the Kentucky Derby races on the calendar. A racehorse winning or making the top four in the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes doesn’t guarantee let alone give an advantage to that thoroughbred’s chances of winning The Run for the Roses itself. Horses to Keep Tabs On

In two races over the past two months, Freedom Trail has thoroughly impressed with back-to-back victories to start its young career; albeit on turf and not on dirt. The Steve Asmussen-trained colt picked up its first-ever win this past September at the neighboring Kentucky Downs race, and has finished no worse than fifth place in each of its four career starts against much stiffer competition. Instant Coffee is another name to look out for, as the two-year-old colt won its maiden race at Saratoga in December and finished a strong fourth in Keeneland last month, with both races held on dirt tracks akin to the grounds at Churchill Downs.
