Top 3 Cinderellas
Colorado State Rams
Excellent guard play is one of the key elements of a Cinderella NCAA Men’s College Basketball squad. In that sense, the Colorado State Rams are a solid glass slipper pick. The guard duo of David Roddy, 19.5 points and 7.6 boards per, and Isaiah Stevens, 4.9 assists each contest, is the reason the Rams boast a 24.4 record. Roddy and Stevens can hang with any pair of guards in the country.
Murray State Racers
The Racers have lost a total of 2 games this season. Murray State hasn’t lost since Auburn beat them 71-58 on Dec. 22. The string of victories has climbed to 20 when Murray State beat Morehead State in the OVC Championship. So, yes, the Racers are a pretty good squad.
Michigan Wolverines
At the beginning of the season, the Wolverines were a Final Four team. Heading into the Big Ten Tournament, Michigan needs to win a couple of games to secure a spot in the NCAA Tournament. The wins should come because Juwan Howard’s squad has gotten better in the last couple of weeks. Howard’s suspension due to throwing a punch after a loss to Wisconsin is the best thing that could have happened to him. Hopefully, the Wolverines play light out and make the tournament. Because if they do, they for sure become a serious Cinderella.
Top 3 Sleepers
Texas Longhorns
Texas lost 10 games during the regular season. Before putting a fork into the Longhorns, though, it’s important to realize who the teams are that beat Texas. 1 of the losses happened against Gonzaga. 2 losses happened versus Texas Tech. Baylor beat Texas twice. Kansas beat Texas once. So 6-of-4 losses were against 4 of the best teams in the nation. Don’t sleep on the Horns.
USC Trojans
The Trojans lost 6 games during the regular season. 2 were to the Arizona Wildcats. So USC is a cut below AZ. Who isn’t? Another loss happened to UCLA, a preseason Final Four favorite. The Trojans are plenty good enough to make it to the Sweet 16. Then, depending on their draw, who knows?
Seton Hall Pirates
The Pirates started the season hot and then lost 6-of-9. But the Hall ended the season winning 5 straight. Not only that, but Seton Hall beat Georgetown in their first Big East Tournament game. Even if the Pirates lose on March 10 versus UConn, their NCAA Tournament spot is assured. Give the Pirates a big shot to make the Sweet 16. Like USC, if the Hall makes the Sweet 16, who knows how far they can go?
Top 3 Bracket Busters
Montana State Bobcats
Montana State has a real nice inside and outside combination with guard Xavier Bishop and Jubrile Belo. Bishop averages 13.7 points per and 4.3 assists each game. Belo averages over 7 boards each contest. Overall, the Bobcats score close to 77 per game. If they catch their first round opponent napping, watch out.
Colgate Raiders
The Raiders score over 76 per. Like Montana State, Colgate leans on a top guard, Nelly Cummings. Cummings scores 14.5 points per game. Backcourt mate Tucker Richardson leads the team with close to 4 assists each contest. Expect Cummings and Richardson to challenge their first round backcourt opponent no matter who Colgate plays.
Longwood Lancers
Counting their 79-58 win over Winthrop in the Big South Tournament Championship, Longwood will enter the NCAA Tournament winners of 8 straight and winners of 19 of their last 20. The Lancers average over 76 points per while shooting over 38% from three and over 45% from the field. Give Longwood a real shot to upset not just one, but two teams on their way to the Sweet 16.
