2022 March Madness Odds Update (March 14th)

By Carlos Chacon

The Gonzaga Bulldogs were unbeaten entering the 2021 NCAA Tournament and would have gone down as one of the greatest teams in history had they won their first national title. However, the Zags were knocked off in the title game by Baylor. Oddsmakers immediately installed Gonzaga as the favorite to cut down the nets in the 2022 Big Dance, and they enter the tourney as +300 favorites.

Gonzaga also enters the Big Dance at No. 1 in the Associated Press Top 25. The Bulldogs wound up with 54 of the 61 first-place votes from a national media panel Monday after romping through the West Coast Conference tournament to land at No. 1 in the final AP Top 25 for the second straight year.

    • Who are the Favorites to Win the 2022 March Madness Tournament?

The Bulldogs begin their title quest on Thursday against Georgia State in Portland, Oregon, where they should have a hefty fan advantage. They would face Boise State or Memphis in the West Region’s second round. Coach Mark Few’s team only lost three games this season: Against Duke, Alabama and Saint Mary’s. While the Zags are the No. 1 seed in the West Region, Duke is the No. 2. Gonzaga is 12-3 vs. Quad 1 and 2 teams, 10-3 vs. Quad 1, the fourth-most wins in the nation vs. Quad 1 teams.

The Bulldogs got a one seed for the fifth time in program history, and fourth in the last five tournaments. GU is the first program to receive back-to-back number one overall seeds since Duke in 1999, 2000 and 2001.

GU has the most wins in the NCAA Tournament since 2017, going 15-4, Michigan is next at 12-4. The Bulldogs’ 20 wins in the tournament since 2015 is also the most, with Villanova second at 17, North Carolina third at 16 and Duke at 15. Gonzaga is one of only two teams to win its opening-round NCAA Tournament game each of the last 12 tournaments, Kansas is the other at 14. The Zags are the only program to appear in the last six Sweet 16s.

Drew Timme was named the West Coast Conference Player of the Year, while Chet Holmgren was the Newcomer and Defensive Player of the Year. Timme, Holmgren and Andrew Nembhard earned First Team All-WCC honors. Timme and Holmgren are the early +900 favorites to win the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player Award. If chalk held, Gonzaga would get a rematch with East No. 1 Baylor in the Final Four. The Bears are +1200 to repeat.

Arizona, the top seed in the South Region, is the +600 second favorite. The Wildcats never did reach a Final Four under former coach Sean Miller. Can they do it under first-year coach Tommy Floyd? He was formerly an assistant under Few at Gonzaga. There is one major injury concern for UA entering the Dance: Guard Kerr Kriisa suffered a sprained right ankle in the final minute of last Thursday’s Pac-12 quarterfinal win over Stanford. He didn’t play in that tournament afterward as the Cats won it but he could return for the NCAA tourney. Kriisa averages 10.1 points, 2.5 rebounds and 4.9 assists per game.

The Wildcats will open March Madness in San Diego with an opening round match-up versus the First Four winner of Bryant and Wright State. UA is a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament for a seventh time in program history. The Wildcats return to San Diego for postseason play for just the second time after winning its first two games there during the 2014 NCAA Tournament.

Who Should You Keep an Eye Out For?

Kentucky (+800), Kansas (+850) and Auburn (+1200) round out the favorites. Kentucky is a No. 2 seed in the East yet has better odds to win it all than No. 1 Baylor does. Kansas is the No. 1 in the Midwest. Playing as the No. 1 seed for the 15th time in program history, Kansas enters the NCAA Tournament as the Big 12 regular season and tournament champions, posting a 28-6 overall record and 14-4 mark in conference play. The Jayhawks will take on the winner of No. 16 seeds Texas Southern/Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Thursday in Fort Worth, Texas.

Auburn is a No. 2 seed behind Kansas in the Midwest. It is the second-highest tournament seed for the Tigers (27-5), who won the SEC regular-season title outright for the first time since 1999. They were previously seeded a program-best No. 1 in 1999. Auburn went 7-3 this season against NCAA Tournament teams including UConn, Arkansas, Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky, LSU, Loyola Chicago, Yale and Murray State. They will play No. 15 seed Jacksonville State (21-10) on Friday in Greenville, S.C.
