    • Which team among Gonzaga, Arizona, and Kansas offers the best shot at the best odds to win the National Championship?

The Zags’ odds are too low to warrant a bet. Gonzaga is a good team and should challenge for a Final Four spot, but even if the Zags get past Arkansas, they must beat Duke or Texas Tech to make the Final Four. Arizona or Kansas offer similar odds. Of the two, the Jayhawks have the easiest path to the Final Four. But once there, they are likely to have to beat Villanova, Arizona, or Houston. That won’t be easy.

If Zona makes the Final Four, their semifinal opponent will be Kansas, Providence, Iowa State or Miami. U-of-A should beat any of those teams. So although Zona has the toughest path to the Final Four, if they make it, they’ll have a great shot of winning the National Championship and offer much better odds than the Zags, which makes Arizona the best play among the three.

Is there a top play among Houston, Texas Tech, Villanova, Duke, Purdue, and UCLA?

UCLA should have a tough time beating North Carolina. Texas Tech is a good team, but they face a Duke team that’s on a mission. Houston is a solid squad, but they face a seriously talented team in the Arizona Wildcats. Then if they beat Zona, a date with Villanova looms. Purdue has the easiest path to the Final Four. But, again, Purdue must play North Carolina or UCLA in their next game.

Among this group, the team that stands out is Duke. The Blue Devils have gotten better during the tournament. Mark Williams can hang with Drew Timme and nobody on Gonzaga’s squad can hang with Paolo Banchero. So if it comes down to Duke versus the Zags, the Blue Devils can win.

Does North Carolina offer overlay or underlay odds?

The Tar Heels built a 25-point lead over 1-seed Baylor in their Round 2 game only to see the lead evaporate. No worries. UNC outplayed Baylor in overtime to knock the Bears from the tournament. The Tar Heels are for real. Armando Bacot might be the best big man left in the tournament. He’s unstoppable.

If Brady Manek and guards R.J. Davis and Caleb Love play well, the Heels can beat any team left in the NCAA Tournament, which is why North Carolina offers overlay odds.

Starting with Michigan at +5000, can a case be made for any of the major Sweet 16 underdogs to win the title?

Michigan might be the best team among the remaining underdogs. But the Wolverines must beat Villanova and then take down either Houston or Arizona just to make the Final Four.

Arizona blasted Michigan during the regular season and the Wolverines will have a heck of a time breaking down Houston’s D. So the Wolverines aren’t a good play. Providence and Arkansas, though, have much better chances of winning the title then their odds indicate. If the Razorbacks get by Gonzaga, they can beat Texas Tech or Duke and make the Final Four.

So far, Arkansas hasn’t covered a spread. But they have beaten a couple of teams that many basketball handicappers believed they’d lose too. So give the Hogs a chance. If the Friars can beat Kansas, Providence should handle Miami or Iowa State. Providence has yet to allow 60 points to an opponent. The Big East squad is one of the most patient teams in the tournament.

Both Providence and Arkansas offer overlay odds to win the National Championship. So if you’re looking to back a huge underdog, consider throwing money behind the Razorbacks or Friars.
