2022 March Madness Sweet 16 Shocking Predictions

By Carlos Chacon

Oh, how sweet it is indeed to go dancing our way into the Sweet 16 phase of the 2022 NCAA Tournament. Only three No. 1 seeds remain in the tourney and there are plenty more superb matchups in the round ready to deliver even more March Madness thrills that we’re all clamoring for. That being said, we’ve taken this opportunity to make our own predictions on how the regional semifinals stage will pan out.

Nitrobetting is ready to dish out some timely assists to our bettors all throughout the 2022 March Madness season. This time, let’s break down our three bold predictions for the Sweet 16 round of the 2022 March Madness Men’s Basketball Tournament.

3 Huge 2022 March Madness Sweet 16 Round Predictions

Duke vs. Texas Tech Will Be the Best Game in the Sweet 16

Apart from the looming possibility that this could be the last game of the storied career of Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski, the upcoming Sweet 16 matchup between the No. 2 seed Blue Devils and the third-seeded Texas Tech Red Raiders is also widely regarded as the most evenly-matched affair at this stage of the tournament.

As of this writing, Duke is a mere (-1) favorite to beat Texas Tech on Wednesday. That’s in large part because of the Red Raiders’ top-10 defense in the nation during the regular season; one that allowed just an average of 60.4 points per game to their opponents. Duke, meanwhile, was ninth in Division I averaging 80.1 points per contest, making this offense vs. defense a can’t-miss showdown between two storied college basketball programs.

Gonzaga Finally With a Blowout Win

It’s been rough sledding for the top-ranked Gonzaga Bulldogs, who’ve come out slow in the first half of their first two games in the Big Dance. Saturday’s four-point win over ninth-seeded Memphis is very worrying, especially with the red-hot Arkansas Razorbacks on tap.

Luckily, Arkansas’ offense isn’t really up to the same level with the Bulldogs. The Razorbacks scored just 53 points on a dismal 27.5-percent shooting clip from the field against New Mexico State, with 22 of those 53 points coming from the charity stripe. For as long as Gonzaga doesn’t play reckless defense to send Arkansas to the free-throw line often, the Zags should make it to the Elite Eight with relative ease with their own brand of offense that was tops in the nation at the end of the regular season.

Michigan Stages Biggest Upset of the Round Over Villanova

The 11th-seeded Michigan Wolverines have a nice redemption arc going for them right now in the wake of the controversial statements recently made by head coach and former NBA player, Juwan Howard. Michigan’s streak of five consecutive appearances in the Sweet 16 stage of the tournament is second only to aforementioned Gonzaga’s streak (six).

Next for the Wolverines is a date against a real March Madness powerhouse in the No. 2 seed Villanova Wildcats, who’ve won each of their first two games of the tournament by double digits. Villanova is currently (-4.5) favorites to beat its Sweet 16 opponent, but Michigan’s stellar tandem of Eli Brooks and Hunter Dickinson (50 combined points in the second-round win over Tennessee) will be hard for the Wildcats to contain.
