2021 F1 Monaco Grand Prix Recap

Leclerc didn’t start in last year’s Monaco Grand Prix, which is why it’s interesting he shows up in this race as the chalk. Not only did Leclerc not start, but he hasn’t driven his best in the last three races, failing to catch Verstappen. In last year’s event, Verstappen grabbed the checkered flag. Carlos Sainz followed Verstappen while McLaren driver Lando Norris finished third. Sergio Perez finished fourth.

Which driver has the best chance of winning the Monaco Grand Prix? Leclerc or Verstappen?

Based on the odds, it’s Leclerc. But F1 handicappers will have a tough time turning their backs on Verstappen. Max has won 3 straight and 4-of-5. Not only that, but Verstappen excelled at Monaco last year. So there’s no reason to believe he shouldn’t be one of the top two drivers in this year’s event. If the odds hold, Verstappen is the better play over Leclerc. If the odds switch, consider backing Leclerc. Ferrari is desperate for a victory after Red Bull’s 3 straight checkered flags.

Which driver between Carlos Sainz and Sergio Perez finishes higher than the other?

Based on the first practice, Perez looks ready to rumble. Sergio finished second behind Leclerc during the first practice, signaling he should grab an excellent starting position. It’s tough to make Sergio the winner. But Perez should be in a position to beat out Carlos Sainz and step to the podium in third place. No doubt, Leclerc and Verstappen will finish first or second. Sergio Perez is a good bet to finish third.

Is this the race that George Russell or Lewis Hamilton breaks through? And if so, which driver is the better play?

So far this season, Russell is showing he’s as every bit as good of a driver as Hamilton. In most races Russell has beaten Hamilton. At the Spanish Grand Prix, the event before Monaco, George Russell grabbed third ahead of Red Bull and Ferrari. Hamilton finished fifth. Things change quickly in F1. It appears George Russell is Mercedes top driver, not Lewis Hamilton. So if you want back one or the other lean towards backing Russell.

Which huge underdog has the best chance to step to the podium?

Valtteri Bottas is proving you can’t keep a good driver down. Bottas fled Mercedes for Alfa Romero after last season. No problem. Valtteri has driven great this season. Bottas has routinely finished in the top 10. At Spain, he finished sixth. So give Bottas the best chance to step to the podium on Sunday. Also give Lando Norris a look. Norris shouldn’t repeat his third place finish from 2021. But the odds to win are tremendous and, sometimes, crazy things happen.
