Wiggin’ Out When Curry Lacked Spice
In a must-win game for the Warriors, Stephen Curry had one of his worst performances of the Finals. Curry scored just 16 points on 7-of-22 shooting from the field whilst also uncharacteristically missing all nine of his three-point attempts.
Thankfully, Andrew Wiggins bailed out the Warriors in Game 5 with arguably his finest playoff performance ever. Wiggins tallied team-highs of 26 points and 13 rebounds, with 16 of his points coming in the first half to set a new personal postseason best for the former first-overall pick. Although, Wiggins did also share his struggles from deep along with Steph, as he went 0-for-6 from beyond the arc.
Dray and Klay Came to Play
Curry’s supporting cast outside of Wiggins certainly came to the rescue in Game 6 as well. Fellow splash brother Klay Thompson scored 21 points and five threes on 7-of-14 shooting, while Draymond Green was his usual pesky self on defense, finishing with eight points, eight boards, and six assists before fouling out as the Dubs held the Celtics to just 41.3 percent shooting from the field.
Golden State’s two-point shooting was still on par at that (46.6 FG%) in a night when the team went an abhorrent 9-for-40 from long distance (22.5 percent). On the bright side, the Warriors experienced a quick Poole Party of sorts with Jordan Poole scoring 14 points and nailing three of six three-point attempts, including a deep buzzer-beater to end the third quarter to give the Dubs all the momentum they needed to close matters out in the fourth quarter.
High and Low Tides Parted the C’s
It was an erratic performance for the Celtics in Game 5, to say the least. Boston went 0-for-12 from the field to start the game and had, 9 turnovers already by the end of the first half. But suddenly, the team emulated Golden State’s penchant for a third-quarter explosion by overcoming a 16-point deficit by the third quarter, including making six consecutive three-point attempts to take control of the game in that period.
Unfortunately, the Celtics crumbled in the fourth quarter, which was supposed to be their strong suit as they scored just 20 points as a team in the final frame. The stats look decent for Boston’s three big stars in Jayson Tatum (20 points, 10 rebounds), Jaylen Brown (18 points, nine boards) and Marcus Smart (20 points), but it’s worth noting that the three also combined for 13 of the team’s whopping 18 turnovers in Game 5.
