2022 NFL Fantasy Football Season TE Sleeper Picks

By Jeff Stinger

As many tenured fantasy football managers know, tight end is the most demanding slot to fill on the fantasy roster. If one is not fortunate enough to draft a high-value top-five tight end in the first three rounds, there’s no need to worry as a handful of players in that position could be had in the later portions of the draft. After all, a handful of underrated tight ends do end up breaking out each and every season.

Hunter Henry (Patriots)

Given a healthy campaign, Hunter Henry is one of the more rock-solid fantasy tight ends on the board. After several injury-filled seasons as a Charger, Henry played all 17 games in his debut season in New England and hauled in nine touchdown catches in the process. Although 50 receptions for a little over 600 receiving yards aren’t as appealing, Henry’s upside as a perennial end-zone threat in the Pats’ offense definitely warrants a starting spot on a fantasy roster.

Robert Tonyan (Packers)

Given that the Packers are (+1,200) sleepers to win Super Bowl LVII, Robert Tonyan’s value in fantasy will always be in question. Unfortunately, the Indiana State product’s 2021 season was cut short mid-season due to a torn ACL. Now at full strength and with Aaron Rodgers lacking in receiving options compared to previous years, many experts are high on Tonyan to have his best fantasy campaign since 2020 when he caught a whopping 11 TD passes from A-God.

Mike Gesicki (Dolphins)

Fourth-year Fins tight end Mike Gesicki has quietly become one of the more consistent tight ends in fantasy. In fact, the former second-round pick ranked fifth in receptions (73) and eighth in receiving yards (713) amongst all tight ends in receiving yards last season. Those are some pretty stellar numbers for Gesicki, who holds more value in PPR leagues than standard but is a decent mid-tier TE pickup across all formats regardless.

Pat Freiermuth (Steelers)

Whether it’s the debuting Kenny Pickett (the +700 odds-on favorite to win the 2022 Offensive Rookie of the Year award) or the former second-overall pick Mitchell Trubisky under center for the Steelers, the biggest benefactor on Pittsburgh’s offense due to the change at starting QB has to be Pat Freiermuth. Pickett and Trubisky will likely call upon Freiermuth’s number in check-down situations. In turn, Freiermuth could very well top his already decent 2021 stats of 60 catches for seven TD catches in his sophomore NFL season.

Cole Kmet (Bears)

Another tight end who hauled in 60 catches in 2021 is Chicago’s Cole Kmet, who finished the season with 612 receiving yards (10.2 YPC). Sadly, former Notre Dame standout failed to find the end zone all season despite playing in all 17 games. For fantasy managers who are high on Justin Fields finally taking the next step in the pros, Kmet is a more than a viable TE sleeper selection who deserves a spot on the bench as a speculative stash from the later rounds of re-draft leagues.
