New York Jets
Last season, the Jets went 6-11 against the spread. Part of the issue was that quarterback Zach Wilson missed some time. Although tackle Mekhi Becton may be out for the season, the Jets’ offensive line is better in 2022 than it was in 2021.
Also, NYJ drafted one of the most gifted running backs in college in Iowa State player Breece Hall. Rookie wide receiver Garrett Wilson and rookie corner Sauce Gardner ensure both units play well. The Jets should cover at least 3 more games this season than they did in 2021.
New York Giants
Like their city counterpart, the Giants finished last season with a 6-11 ATS record. Also, like the Jets, the Giants should finish with no worse than a 9-8 against the spread record in 2022. NYG improved even more than the Jets. It all starts with the Briand Daboll hire. Daboll was Buffalo’s offense coordinator. He will try to develop Daniel Jones the way he developed Josh Allen.
Jones doesn’t have Allen’s speed, but the Giants’ starting quarterback has averaged 4.8 yards per carry during his career. This is the first time Jones plays behind a solid offensive line, the Giants drafted Alabama tackle Evan Neal, and with a talented defense, linebacker Kayvon Thibodeaux is a favorite to win NFL Rookie Defensive Player of the Year. Daboll will find ways for Jones to use his wheels in the open field. Expect the G-Men to be a surprise team in 2022.
Jacksonville Jaguars
After 2021’s debacle, the only direction is up for the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Jags hired Doug Peterson, who won a Super Bowl with Philadelphia, as head coach. Since then, it’s been all gravy.
Tavon Walker, the top pick in April’s draft, joins a defense that includes the great Josh Allen. Jacksonville also drafted Utah linebacker Devin Lloyd, one of the most gifted defensive players in this year’s draft.
On offense, Trevor Lawrence will benefit, playing behind an upgraded offensive line that includes former Washington Commander Brandon Scherff at right guard. When Scherff is healthy, he’s one of the best in the NFL.
Cam Robinson, Jacksonville’s left tackle, got a nice contract. So he’s ready. Also, running back Travis Etienne is healthy and Christian Kirk is an underrated wide receiver. All of Jacksonville’s upgrades point to a much better ATS record than the 5–12 stat the Jags recorded last season.
Detroit Lions
Last year, Detroit went 11-6 against the spread. By adding the Lions to this list, we’re assuming Detroit, once again, is an overlay in most weeks. The Lions could be a surprise NFC team. Unlike the AFC, there aren’t many conference contenders in the NFC. For sure, the Lions have a better shot of making the playoffs than NFC North rival Chicago.
One of the reasons is because Jared Goff is a solid NFL QB1, Amon-Ra St. Brown is one of the up-and-coming wideouts in the league, and running back DeAndre Swift is for real. Tight-end T.J. Hockenson is also for real.
The offensive line boasts a couple of excellent tackles in Taylor Decker and Penei Sewell. The defense got a massive upgrade when the Lions drafted Michigan defensive end Aidan Hutchinson with the second pick.
Right now, Detroit remains an under the radar team. Give the Lions a big chance to cover close to the same amount of games in 2022 that they covered last season.
